SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) has warned supermarkets and groceries and restaurants , particularly in Region 1, to stop selling and including opium poppy seeds in their menu and product preparations. PDEA Director General Undersecretary Arturo G. Cacdac, Jr. said PDEA joins the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in ordering establishments to stop selling opium poppy seeds. The agencies have observed that several supermarkets and groceries are still openly selling a popular food dressing and dipping sauce that contain opium poppy seeds. Opium Poppy(any part of the plant of the species Papaver somniferum L.; Papaver setigerum DC, Papaver orientale, Papaver bracieatum and Papaver rhoeas), is included in the 1961 United Nations Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs as amended by the 1972 protocol. “Previously, poppy seeds have been used as an active palliative ingredient in pastries, salads and other baking recipes. This raised the alarm on the growing demand for the dangerous drug being used as a culinary ingredient, particularly on salad dips and dressings”, Cacdac said. Section 4, Article II of Republic Act 9165 penalizes the Importation of Dangerous Drugs and/or Controlled Precursors and Essential Chemicals with the penalty of life imprisonment to death and a fine ranging from Five Hundred Thousand Pesos (P500,000.00) to Ten Million Pesos (P10,000,000.00) “PDEA and the FDA jointly caution food companies not to serve and dispense the poppy seeds, being a dangerous drug simply because the law expressly prohibits it,” the PDEA chief said, advising the public to surrender any products containing poppy seeds to the nearest PDEA or FDA regional offices.
