KUALA LUMPUR --Crude palm oil futures on Malaysia's derivatives exchange ended sharply higher at an eight-day high Friday on strong buying as investors took cues from rises in soyoil and crude oil prices.
The benchmark August contract on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives ended MYR72 higher at MYR3,600 a metric ton.
August CPO opened MYR100 higher, but quickly retreated on profit-taking. The contract then broke above MYR3,600 in the afternoon session.
"There is strong support from soyoil for CPO futures today, even though some of the gains had already been factored into yesterday's palm oil prices," a Kuala Lumpur-based trader said.
He said CPO prices retreated off highs as there was adjustment of spreads between soyoil and palm oil.
There was also some profit-taking after the strong opening, said an executive at a Kuala Lumpur-based brokerage.
The contract traded higher throughout the day, moving in tandem with soyoil and crude.
Traders said the highest ever single-day gain in dollar terms for crude oil buoyed market sentiment for most commodities, including palm oil.
When light, sweet crude was trading around $129 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, the Kuala Lumpur-based executive said it was a positive lead for investors.
At 1030 GMT, July crude was trading $2.06 higher at $129.85/barrel in the Globex session of Nymex.
The executive said volumes were thin because of a lack of fresh cues from palm oil fundamentals, which prompted some traders to stay on the sidelines in the run-up to the weekend.
Traders said price direction next week will be influenced by palm oil export shipments trends from Malaysia for June 1-10 after cargo surveyors issue their estimates for the period.
On Tuesday, the Malaysian Palm Oil Board will issue its data on exports, production and end-month stocks in May.
An executive with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization said Asia's palm oil stocks may rise 16% on year to 5 million metric tons in the marketing year ending in September 2008 on the back of large production gains in the major producing countries Malaysia and Indonesia.
July soyoil on the Chicago Board of Trade closed 218 points higher Thursday, at 62.65 cents/pound. At 1036 GMT, July soyoil was trading another 85 points higher at 63.50 cents in electronic trading.
Trading volumes on the BMD fell to 7,798 lots Friday, from 9,834 lots Thursday. Open interest stood at 42,356 lots, up from 41,670 lots. One lot comprises 25 tons.
Cash palm olein for July/August/September traded at $1,245/ton while October/November/December traded at $1,235/ton, said a trader in Singapore.
He said a shipment for July/August/September was swapped at a $20/ton premium with another for October/November/ December.
In Malaysia, cash CPO for prompt shipment was last offered MYR90 higher at MYR3,620/ton.

（吉隆坡）捷博集團（CEPAT，8982；主板種植組）以總值740萬令吉，收購一塊位於吉隆坡市中心土地，以計劃發展高級洋房。
該公司發表文告說，這土地面積為1萬9133平方呎，上面擁有一棟雙層獨立式房屋。該公司將計劃發展6棟高級豪華洋房。
該公司將透過內部資金融資。
