JobStreet.com enters Japan market
KUALA LUMPUR, 18 July 2007

KUALA LUMPUR, 18 July 2007 - JobStreet Corporation Berhad and Asian Commission Corporation today signed a joint venture agreement in Tokyo, Japan. The joint venture, which enables JobStreet.com to enter Japan, will provide opportunities for skilled professionals from South and South-East Asia in the Japanese market.

The agreement was signed by Mark Chang, Founder and CEO of JobStreet Corporation Berhad and Higake Yusuke, Managing Director of Asian Commission Corporation. Present at the signing ceremony was Chief Minister of Penang, Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon.

On incorporation of the joint venture, JobStreet Corporation will subscribe to 60 per cent of the equity in the venture, while Asian Commission Corporation will hold the remaining 40 per cent stake.

Chang said setting up this company could serve to ease the labor shortage for many Japanese companies. In recent years, Japan was beginning to experience a labor crunch due to its declining working-age population. Currently, Japan is encouraging its seniors to work longer; looking to integrate more women into the labor force and easing restrictions on foreign workers.

Chang added: “With our successful operations in Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia, India and Bangladesh, JobStreet will be able to source and recruit many suitable talents to help meet the needs of Japanese companies.”

JobStreet.com, listed on Bursa Malaysia (“JOBS”), is the leading on-line job site in South-East Asia with over four million jobseekers in its database and servicing over 50,000 corporations in the region.

Jobstreet Aims At Japan For South East Asian Job Seekers
KUALA LUMPUR, 6 Dec 2007 (Bernama)

Jobstreet Corporation Bhd (JCB), the provider of online recruitment and human resources management services is looking at bringing professional job seekers from South East Asia to work in Japan.

"We will train the apprentice in the Japanese language and culture about three months at our training centre located in Philippines," said its chief executive officer Mark Chang.

He said the employment programme was part of JCB's joint venture with Asian Commission Corporation (ACC), with which it signed an agreement in Tokyo last month, to form JobStreet Kabushiki Kaisha.

"Under Jobstreet (Japan), we are looking for specific group of engineers mainly in electrical engineering," he said after the JCB's Extraordinary General Meeting here today.

JCB has a sixty percent equity in the venture with ACC.

Chang said JCB was confident of entering into the Japanese market as the country was beginning to experience a labour crunch due to its declining working-age population.

"Currently, Japan is encouraging its seniors to work longer, looking to integrate more women into the labour force and easing restrictions on foreign workers," he said.

JCB is the leading online job site in Southeast Asia with over four million jobseekers in its database and services over fifty thousand corporations in the region.

jobstreet.com

JobStreet.com Among Asia’s Best Companies

JobStreet.com, Malaysia’s most successful online recruitment website, adds to its collection of impressive achievements after it was named by Forbes among Asia’s Best Under a Billion last week.

The list refers to companies that generate 1 billion dollar in annual sales. It features 200 companies selected from over 24,000 companies which are publicly listed around the Asian region.

In coming up with the top 200 companies, Forbes analyzed a series of measurements and parameters such as the company’s revenue growth, as well as the operational profits.

Apart from JobStreet.com, 12th other Malaysian companies were also included among the 200. They are I-Power, Sarawak Oil Palms, CB Industrial Product, Coastal Contracts, Efficient e-Solutions, ETI Tech, Grand-Flo Solution, Hai-O Enterprise, Notion Vtec, Pintaras Jaya, Success Transformer and Plant Offshore. The companies come from various range of industries including tools and equipment, batteries, information technology, palm oil operation, multi-level marketing, oil and gas, and manufacturing.

JobStreet.com was founded in 1997 by Mark Chang, a graduate in mechanical background from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), USA. Mark resigned his job as a manager with a manufacturing company, roped a few friends along and started his way in building JobStreet.com to become an established and well respected recruitment website. At the peak of their achievement, JobStreet.com made a successful debut in the Mesdaq listing in 2006, before ploughing its way into the main board of Bursa Malaysia more than a year later.

The JobStreet.com Success Secret

While they have been many people behind the success of JobStreet.com, the one that deserves most credit is perhaps the founder, Mark Chang. People who are in the recruitment industry know all along that Mark is JobStreet.com’s open secret all along.

It is even more compelling to know that Mark himself is not an IT graduate, but rather a Mechanical Engineer by training and education.

While his Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Texas and Masters (also in Mechanical) from MIT perhaps play lesser parts in his effort building JobStreet from scratch, he would never deny that the exposure in the two institutions have provided him with enough ammunition to compete in a new, challenging environment. Further, 2 of his important comrades in JobStreet now - Albert Wong the Chief Technology Officer and Suresh Thiru the VP were his MIT colleagues.

Mark Chang founded JobStreet.com in 1997 with primary objective to provide Malaysians studying overseas with a platform to find job opportunities back in Malaysia. His earlier days of serious involvement in IT development started 2 years before that with the inception of MOL or Malaysia Online that promotes various applications for the younger generation of Malaysians. Mark sold MOL to Berjaya’s Vincent Tan to pursue his dream building JobStreet, with MOL eventually made name as the first online company in Malaysia listed in the public exchange.

The main idea of JobStreet.com is to provide a breakthrough channel and platform to both employers and job seekers, which for so long had been dominated by traditional newspaper advertising and classified. Mark also had the vision to create a more affordable advertising solutions to the customers, at the same providing a host of other benefits that include easier processing of candidates and faster work turnaround and process.

Additionally, the online job processing features allow the employer to better manage and measure the effectiveness of each job posting. Mark wanted to harness the power of the internet and make it a tool that would completely revolutionize the recruitment process.

Traditionally, when looking for jobs, job seekers would have to painstakingly skim through the job sections in the newspapers, write and print their resume, mail their application and wait forever for a call or reply, if any. JobStreet aimed to change that by introducing a seamless process, which is done in the virtual world and does not require any paper.

Being a pioneer in the online recruitment industry, of course they were problems and hurdles faced by Mark and his small company. Generating interest from the job seekers and selling the ideas of recruiting employees through a new, online system were both tough endeavors back then. Furthermore, the scarcity of internet connection and its slow connection presented a problem and put the job seekers off. The idea was seemed remotely unrealistic for many companies but with support from a small number of multinational clients including Intel, Dell and Motorola, they persevered. And persevere they must.

In some way, Mark may have underestimated himself and the impact JobStreet would bring. During the launching of JobStreet.com’s newly acquired building (Wisma JobStreet) in Kuala Lumpur in March 2006, Mark, in his speech told the audience that his initial plan was to create a sustainable business that will earn him some decent income - the mom-and-pop shop kind of thing and live free from money-worry. Little did he expect that JobStreet.com would soon go for public listing and acquired their own RM10 million building. JobStreet.com also stood firm and became one of those few IT companies that survived the hostile Asian economic downturn in the late 90s. And they did it with style - without those gun blazing people-firing and laying off.

Mark was named as the Technology Entrepreneur of the Year 2004, with the company itself received numerous accolades for its achievements.

15 Popular Job and Recruitment Websites in Malaysia
Jan 15th, 2008

Here are 15 hand-picked, major job and recruitment websites you will be interested to try out. Also, you can notice that the list is arranged according to the website’s rank in Malaysia, based on Alexa traffic rank (i.e. Jobstreet is the 23rd most visited website in Malaysia, and so on).

What is Alexa rank? Alexa is a tool developed by Amazon.com that is used to provide information about traffic of a website and tells the users about its popularity. The lower the rank, the more popular the website is.

Is it accurate?

Alexa rank is not entirely accurate as it only collects information from web browsers which have the Alexa toolbar installed. Savvy internet users and webmasters usually install the Alexa toolbar in their PCs. However, Alexa rank gives a fair result when relative comparison is made between websites competing in the same market niche and targeting similar audience and visitors.

Take note that the list is ranked according to their online popularity and the financial strength, profits and reputation are not taken into account, hence explaining why major recruitment companies like Kelly Services (ranked 37,243), Adecco (28,477), Manpower (17,893) are absent in the list.

1. Jobstreet.com

Rank = 23. Way ahead of its other competitors, Jobstreet.com proves time and again why it is a recruitment portal of choice. Not only it is the most popular, Jobstreet also has the largest physical presence with a few hundred staff countrywide, owns an 8-storey building, and recently moved from Mesdaq to main board of Bursa Malaysia.

2. JobsDB.com

Rank = 265. Another dot com survivor which almost fell victim to dot com bust, JobsDB, which has been around in Malaysia since 1998 today has one of the largest presence in Asia Pacific. JobsDB is organizing its upcoming, major career fair next month.

3. JenJobs.com

Rank = 786. JenJobs.com is the third online recruitment company who featured their commercial in the television after Jobstreet.com and JobsDB.com. The website is owned by Jen Infotech which focuses on the recruitment of IT professionals and other executive positions, operating under the banner of JEN Software International.

4. StarJobs Online

Rank = 930. Prior to its launching, StarJobs Online was said to be capable of dethroning Jobstreet, but thing seems to look otherwise. While 4th is not a bad position, but the website has huge A&P budget at its disposal, hence explaining why my review about them is rather critical.

5. Kareer.com.my

Rank = 1702. From the look of it, Kareer.com.my is developed and operated by Utusan Publication. But frankly I do not know from which language the word ‘kareer’ comes from. Perhaps, it is borrowed from Papua New Guinea, since the website is much more popular in that country! (Kareer.com.my’s rank in PNG = 158). And yes, they blog too.

6. BestJobs

Rank = 1,718. While it is kinda popular, this website comes with some mystery. I am not sure if they have any physical operation in the country, since the contact page shows a Scotland address. Probably I should apply job there, working overseas. Looks like they have correspondences in many other countries too.

7. AsiaPartTime

Rank = 2,637. Unlike the rest of the job sites in the list, AsiaPartTime is in its own niche as this is the only website that caters for part time jobs. The website is backed by a small team with big ambition, and has been in the market not more than a year. I am pretty sure, the founder, Lam will be thrilled to know their website now is pitted against popular and well-financed recruitment portals.

8. Electronic Labor Exchange (ELX)

Rank = 3,707. Electronic Labor Exchange, ELX or Bursa Buruh Electronic is a government-powered (Ministry of Human Resources) portal that allows job seekers to register, and find (and apply) matching jobs. A distinguished feature introduced in this website is that it disallows you to apply for jobs which you are not qualified for.

9. Graduan

Rank = 9,033. Graduan has been around for more than 10 years, and recently published their 11th Graduan booklet guide. Sadly, their website plays the Chipsmore game: sekejap ada, sekejap hilang (now you see, now you don’t). If they don’t fix this, they will see their website climbing down the rank rapidly, and out of sight sooner than they can think of.

10. JAC Recruitment

Rank = 10,092. This is a UK-based recruitment portal, established in London more than 30 years ago. They also have offices in Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, China and Thailand. The Malaysia operation commenced in 1994 and the company also specializes in executive search, contract and temporary staffing as well as recruitment of foreign-speaking personnel, including the Japanese, Korean and others.

11. AllStaff.com.my

Rank = 10, 637. AllStaff is a spin-off from a software company by the name of Pentrac Consulting and has a significant presence in the northern market (Penang especially) and also has an office in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. It provides IT contracting services to major companies like Motorola, Intel, Agilent Technologies, BBraun, Solectron and many more.

12. CollegeGrad.com

Rank = 11,065. CollegeGrad specializes in providing entry level jobs to graduates and graduating students. It also acts as a career center for graduates, providing tools and useful information for those aspiring job seekers who intend to step their shoes in the job market. A useful, niche website.

13. AllyHunt.com

Rank = 12,142. AllyHunt was developed by a group of friendly recruitment consultants, whose aim is to provide better, and faster job matching mechanism. In the screening process, candidates’ resumes that meet the criteria set by the employer will automatically transfered to ‘Prescreen’ folder and if they don’t, they will remain in the Unprocessed folder, which the employer can still view. You can read my review on my AllyHunt back in October 2007.

14. JobLinkAsia

Rank = 12,538. The website comes with additional support functions including staffing and executive search services and advertising solution. With their job search function acting weird and pretty dysfunctional at the moment, the website is now in danger of falling off the radar.

15. FreeJobSite

Rank = 14,984. Sounds unfamiliar, but does JobsandMore (now defunct after a lawsuit 2 years back fold the company up) bring any bell? It is not sure if JobsandMore is behind this, but from the look of it, and since jobsandmore.com domain is redirected to this, perhaps it is true. The difference is that, as the name suggests, this is free for all job site. It is free for employer, and free for job seekers to.

MONSTER.COM is here
Feb 17th, 2008

In case you are aware of the 15 popular recruitment websites in Malaysia, you will notice that Monster.com is not included in the list. However, as expected, the Monster Malaysia website has since making its way into upper half of the list. The website, which was launched in January 2008 (thanks to William of the marketing team for the info), is quickly gaining acceptance, particularly due to its already established presence in the overseas market.

The first and original Monster was created way back in 1994 (JobStreet.com was born about a year later) by Jeff Taylor, who was also heading a recruitment and advertising firm based in Boston, US. The initial response from the employers was somewhat skeptical and they did not like the idea of a job board associated with ‘monster’. Only many years later, with the company now listed in NASDAQ, they realized that the name itself was the driving factor of their success. All statistics are showing the signs that Monster.com is the world’s most popular recruitment website on earth. The website was ranked among the top 20 most visited website worldwide in 2006.

Since the Malaysia operation is relatively new, it is only fair to say that at the moment, much effort is focused at business development while at the same time attracting the candidates and crate buzz. Hence, you will notice that the number of jobs is rather limited. Will it be the same in the next 3 months?

Only time will tell.

21-11-2008: BASF to temporarily halt production
by Surin Murugiah

PETALING JAYA: BASF SE, the world’s largest chemical company, will not lay off workers in Malaysia although it is temporarily shutting down six plants in Kuantan as part of its plan to curb over production due to a significant decline in customer demand.

In an email reply to The Edge Financial Daily yesterday, a BASF spokesperson confirmed that six of the 12 plants at its Kuantan site would be shut down temporarily, while the output of the plants still running would be reduced.

The joint-venture site in Kuantan, BASF Petronas Chemicals, is a 60:40 JV between BASF and Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas). The spokesperson said its butanediole and plasticiser plants were temporarily shut down and that it had reduced capacity utilisation of the acrylic ester plant.

“As the difficult economic situation has resulted in massive decline in key industries and thus significant decline in customer demands in our target markets, we are taking measures to avoid over production at our plants.

“The company will adjust the production capacity utilisation to a manageable level in line with the current weak market,” said the spokesperson.

“BASF (M) Sdn Bhd will continue operations with reduced production capacity in response to the market,” said the spokesperson, adding that BASF in Malaysia had a staff strength of around 1,600 people of whom 47% worked at the plant sites.

“At the moment, no job cuts are intended due to the capacity utilisation rate reductions. We are trying to use all other means to avoid job cuts, eg. reduction of overtime, flexible working time,” said the spokesperson.

The German company had on Wednesday lowered its profit forecast for the second time and said it was temporarily shutting down around 80 plants worldwide as well as reducing production at approximately 100 plants in view of declining orders from the automotive, construction and textile industries.

The company estimated some 20,000 employees of its employees worldwide would be affected by the production cuts.

The spokesperson said BASF would continue to implement its long-term strategy to ensure the company’s continued growth.

“The management and staff will feel the pressure of the tough times but we are all committed to seeing this through together,” said the spokesperson.

Chang Mun Kee,
