SUCCESS Transformer Corp Bhd (7207), a manufacturer of low-voltage transformers, commercial and industrial lightings, sees a bright future in the lighting business this year, helped by its newly-launched light-emitting diode (LED) products.
According to its executive director Woh Way Cheang, the company has begun doing research and development on the LED products as early as three years ago, and started selling its products in the second half of last year.
"We are very careful and conservative, and didn't want to sell immature products. In a lot of LED products, there are heat issues, so we wanted to make sure that our products addressed the issue before going into the market," said Woh in a Business Times interview.
Lighting business plays a big role in the company's overall financial performance. Last year, it contributed about 50 per cent of its revenue, of which less than 5 per cent of its lighting business come from LED products.
"This year, we expect between 10 per cent and 15 per cent of our lighting business to come from LED products," said Woh.
For a start, the company will sell its LED products to commercial and industrial users, such as petrol kiosks, shopping complexes and hotels. It is also selling its LED products overseas. Later, it plans to penetrate into the mass, household market.
"We are already receiving orders from Australia and Sweden. Eventually, we will go into the household market as well," he said.
However, the journey might not be all smooth, as the LED products are about five to 10 times more expensive than the conventional high intensity discharge (HID) lighting, said Woh.
"That's why we are targeting more developed markets, especially the overseas markets," he said.
Woh believes it is only a matter of time that its LED business overtakes its conventional HID products, especially when the consumer and the market understands the benefits of LED products.
Woh said unlike HID lights that have mercury content, LED is mercury-free. He added that LED can last 10 times longer than the conventional lighting.
"In terms of performance, LED lights can deliver almost the same, if not the same, brightness with less watts. So, this means we can save electricity when using LED," said Woh.
