(Ajiya)

Ajiya sets five-year target to take the lead
BY ZAZALI MUSA IN SEGAMAT, JOHOR

AJIYA Bhd has set a target for itself to become a leading building materials company in Malaysia and South-East Asia in five years.  ”The company believes that it has to be strong in the country first before thinking of venturing overseas,” Ajiya group managing director Chan Wah Kiang said.  The Segamat-based company and its subsidiaries manufacture, distribute and market metal-based building materials.  Ajiya also produces an extensive range of glass and safety glass in Malaysia that is used by white goods manufacturers and furniture makers.   Chan said the company always looked at the Japanese automobile makers that had conquered the world market with their high quality vehicles.  He said these manufacturers only ventured outside Japan when they felt that they were strong enough domestically before competing internationally.

Chan said the company started venturing outside Malaysia in 2003 by exporting its products to Singapore.   Last year, Ajiya's products entered Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam.  “The company regards the three countries as its first-tier step to further expand its presence into other Asean countries,” he said.  Chan said the Asean region had a population of over 550 million people and that the regional market was too big to ignore.
“The Asean market is as equally important and lucrative as China or India's. However, Ajiya's has limited resources to penetrate all Asean countries at one go. We had to do it slowly and steady by going for the three countries first,” he said.

Chan said Thailand's vibrant economy and booming construction industry was offering plenty of opportunities to the building materials industry.
Indonesia, he said, was politically stable now with the change in its leadership. The country is also attracting more foreign investors to develop its economy. “Apart from economic development, Indonesia also has to rebuild its Aceh province, damaged by tsunami in December last year.
“In fact, the company has received many enquiries from Indonesian parties to supply building materials to Aceh,” he said.

Chan said apart from China, Vietnam was also becoming a favourite spot for most multinational corporations (MNCs) to relocate their operations.
“The Vietnamese government is business-friendly and aggressively attracting investors into the country,” he said.  Chan said Ajiya would continue to build up its presence in Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam this year by developing its business contacts.  “We hope to forge synergistic partnerships with locals before setting up manufacturing facilities in those countries,” he said.  “The company is looking to set up one plant each in Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam next year or by 2007,” he said.  Chan said by that time, business transactions in the three countries were sufficient enough for the company to have its own manufacturing facilities.  He said the company found that it was uneconomical to set up operations overseas if there were not enough transactions to sustain its operations.  “That is why the company is building and strengthening its position in the three countries now,” Chan said.  He said the company was willing to invest between RM10mil and RM20mil to set up a manufacturing plant.   Chan said the company might consider joint ventures or acquiring existing operations in its expansion programme.
“We are also grooming our managers for overseas postings under our regional expansion plans,” he said.  The company has several plants in Segamat, Puchong and Sungai Petani catering to the southern, central and northern markets, including southern Thailand.

Apart from Asean countries, Chan said the company did not have any immediate plans to venture into China.  But he did not dismiss the possibility of setting up operations in China in 10 to 20 years from now.  “You have to be a giant in order to venture into a giant market like China. To have operations in China will require full commitment unless the company is willing to move the entire operations from Malaysia to the republic,” he said.
Chan said the company had no plans to move its local operations to China as it found that the Chinese working culture was totally different from that of Malaysia.  He also said Ajiya had no interest to go to India although many parties in the country had expressed their interest to work with the company. “There is no doubt that the Indian economy is emerging and its construction industry booming, but there are many red tapes.”   The company now exports 40% of its products to Australia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

MD: Good times ahead for building materials industry
BY ZAZALI MUSA IN SEGAMAT, JOHOR

MALAYSIA still offers good opportunities for Ajiya Bhd to establish itself as one of the leading industrial building system providers (IBS) in the country.  Ajiya group managing director Chan Wah Kiang said although the local construction industry had slowed down, the company was confident that it would be back on track again.  He said the company was banking on the announcement made by the Government recently to revive the sector by creating 26 projects worth RM2.4bil.

Chan said the multi-billion dollar integrated holiday resort-cum-casino projects in Singapore would also create demand for building materials.
“We are crossing our fingers for good times ahead in the construction and building materials industry,” he said in an interview.  Chan said it was important for the company to become a leading IBS in the country in view of stiff competition in the construction industry.  “As a one-stop integrated centre for building materials, we are able to customise our products to our clients according to their specifications. Once we have a strong footing in Malaysia, it is only appropriate for us to expand overseas,” Chan said.   The company is building up its Ajiya brand to become a well-known and respectable name in Malaysia and other countries in the region.  “A famous brand will open up more opportunities for the company to market its products and to compete against other regional players,” Chan said.  The company’s safety glass products will enter the Japanese market this year.

Chan said the company was proud to be able to penetrate Japan's safety glass market, known for its stringent requirements.  Ajiya produces tempered and other types of strengthened glass.  Prospects for building materials industry are good as more builders worldwide were looking for new types of materials and designs.  “Building materials made from metal and glass are getting cheaper and more widely used now to replace timber and concrete-based materials,” said Chan.

He said timber was getting more expensive due to its limited supply and campaigns by environmentalists against the cutting down of trees.   Chan said the demand for metal and glass-based building materials was small 10 to 15 years ago because of their limited supply and high prices.  ”Wooden door frames were still cheap because of the abundant supply of timber when we started selling metal door frames,” he said.
However, the aggressive campaigns by environmentalists against the cutting down of trees in recent years had caused the price of timber to rise. As such, builders opted for greater usage of metal-based door frames.

According to Chan, the usage of glass has also gained popularity as the building material of choice over concrete.   “Architects all over the world are always on the lookout for materials which can help to reduce energy costs. Glass is that material,” Chan said, adding that Ajiya had the technology to produce glass with design versatility.  Ajiya would focus its attention on developing and strengthening its safety glass segment, which it started in late 2003.  The company is not resting on its laurels although it has an extensive range of safety glass products in the country and probably in the region.  “We are working hard to be a leading glass player in the country first, and like always after that, we will expand beyond Malaysia,” Chan said.  He said the company was also supplying glass to multinational white goods manufacturers and major furniture companies in Malaysia.

Chan said many multinational corporations (MNCs) with local operations also bought Ajiya's glass products and exported them to manufacturing facilities in other parts of the world.  He said among Ajiya's glass products were gas hob tops, microwave oven doors, washing machine windows and computer screens.  Chan said the company also wanted to promote its safety glass among local furniture makers currently relying on imported glass.  He said many local furniture makers were using China-made glass that had “flooded” the market.  “We want to capture a large share of the local furniture glass market within the next two years,” Chan said.

Ajiya sets five-year target to take the lead

AJI ...

Ajiya

MD: Good times ahead for building materials industry[/b ...
