SAN FRANCISCO  -- Government-owned American International Group Inc. on Friday reported a second consecutive quarterly profit after the credit markets' rally boosted the value of its massive derivatives exposures.
However, the company also pointed out continued declines in sales and premiums at some of its main insurance businesses and said it will take a $5 billion charge against results for the fourth quarter.

Shares of AIG fell nearly 10% to close at $35.48.

Catherine Seifert, insurance analyst at Standard & Poor's Equity Research, said AIG's operating profit exceeded her estimates, but she also noted that gains in future quarters could be undermined if credit markets were to deteriorate again.

"Most insurance units posted double-digit premium declines and subpar underwriting results," Seifert added in a note.

Third-quarter net income attributable to common shareholders was $92 million, or 68 cents a share, a reversal from the prior year's net loss of $24.5 billion, or $181.02 a share, AIG said.

The company had suffered nearly $100 billion in net losses last year as the financial crisis brought the insurer to the brink of collapse. The government saved AIG through a series of bailouts -- worth more than $100 billion -- and owns nearly 80% of the company.

On an adjusted basis, which excludes net realized investment gains and losses and other items, profit was $1.9 billion, or $2.85 a share, compared with losses of $9.2 billion, or $68.36 a share, in the third quarter of 2008.

American Intl Group, Inc. (AIG) - AIG closed back below the 10 day moving average ( $36 ) on Friday after the company released earnings. At this point, I will only buy the stock on a close over the 50 day moving average ( $41.09 ) after the it failed 3 times at this level last week. I will think about shorting AIG if it closes below $33.

American Intl Group, Inc. (AIG) - AIG surged Tuesday morning after Moody's told Bloomberg that AIG could potentially pay back the US Government. The stock almost broke $40 in pre market but hit a high of $39.35 during regular hours. I plan to buy AIG when the stock breaks above $39.35.

American Intl Group, Inc. (AIG) - AIG went down Wednesday due to the threat of the CEO leaving the company. The CEO came out late in the day and said he is committed to AIG. I continue to watch Tuesday's high of $39.35. As soon as the stock breaks above that level, I will jump in for a trade.

American Intl Group, Inc. (AIG) - AIG is still hovering around the $36 level. I am watching three major resistance levels very closely - $39.35, $40.09, and $40.53 which is the 50 day moving average. I plan to buy AIG when the stock finally closes back over the 50 day moving average.

I am waiting for the next big price break out with heavy volume to jump back in. I would also buy more if the stock closed back above the 50 day moving average. $33 support must hold!

American Intl Group, Inc. (AIG) - AIG continues the recent downtrend on low volume. I am watching $37.02 which was the high back on November 16th. I will jump into AIG for a trade when the stock breaks above this level. $40 is longer term resistance.

American Intl Group, Inc. (AIG) - The volume continues to be low and AIG continues to fall. The stock must hold $33 on a closing basis and $32.60 on a intraday basis or AIG could be headed under $30. On the upside, I will be a buyer of AIG when the stock breaks back above $34.

AIG Price Target Cut 40% by Bernstein on Reserves (Update1)

Nov. 30 (Bloomberg) -- American International Group Inc. had its stock price target cut 40 percent by Todd Bault, an analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein who said insufficient reserves may hinder the insurer’s efforts to repay U.S. bailout funds.

AIG has an $11 billion shortfall, Bault said in a note to investors today reviewing the company’s reserves to pay property-casualty claims including workers’ compensation and professional liability.

Chief Executive Officer Robert Benmosche is seeking to bolster profitable underwriting units to help repay the $182.3 billion bailout that was required after investment losses tied to subprime mortgages. Insurance operations, already facing customer and employee defections, may need additional funds to pay claims, Bault said.

“AIG shareholders and the federal government face considerably more uncertainty than they may have anticipated,” Bault said. “AIG would likely have to take some kind of reserve charge” before selling its Chartis property-casualty business or holding a public offering for the division.

AIG slipped 3.3 percent to $32.20 at 8:54 a.m. in early trading in New York. Bault lowered his target on AIG to $12. Mark Herr, a spokesman for the insurer, didn’t immediately return a message seeking comment.
