Golden Agri may see long-term benefits from major palm oil trader Cargill’s plan to achieve 100% sustainable palm oil output by 2015.

“It’s probably a long-term positive. I don’t think we’ll see any immediate impact,” says Carey Wong, an analyst at OCBC. “I don’t think at the moment they’re at fully sustainable certification yet,” he says, but it should be achieved by 2015.

But he adds, “near-term, it will still be the (CPO) price that is driving the shares.” The UK government and industry has also committed to ensuring CPO used in food and consumer products is sustainable by 2015. CPO futures declined Tuesday amid concerns about rising inventories; the benchmark January contract at Bursa Malaysia Derivatives ended 1.8% lower at MYR2,501/ton ($1,000/ton).

Goldman Sachs tips downside risks to Golden Agri’s earnings after its subsidiary, Sinar Mas Agro Resources (SMART), reported 3Q12 results.

It notes SMART, which comprised about 32% of Golden Agri’s 2011 fresh-fruit-bunch production and owns all of its refineries, reported 3Q12 core net profit excluding forex rose 1% on-quarter to IDR513 billion ($65.2 million), with 10% on-quarter FFB production growth and 29% on-quarter sales growth offset by EBIT margins’ decline to 10% from 2Q12’s 12%.

While noting SMART is only one part of Golden Agri’s operations, with its earnings trend not necessarily reflecting the wider group, GS adds the flat on-quarter performance indicates downside risks to its 2012 forecasts, which are in-line with consensus, especially if the refineries didn’t sell through and liquidate as much inventory as expected.

The house expects Golden Agri to report 3Q12 core net profit of US$151 million ($184.3 million), up 33% on-quarter, on seasonally higher production and strong volume sales offset by lower CPO prices; results are due Nov 12. Goldman keeps a Neutral call. The stock is down 1.6% at $0.62 with 59.5 million shares changing hands.

Golden Agri is down 1.6% to$0.60 after reporting 3Q12 net profit fell 22% on-year to US$86 million ($105 million) on lower CPO prices and higher soybean costs.

The results were slightly below expectations, says Carey Wong, an analyst at OCBC, adding it was mainly due to inventory rising much more than expected again.

“They appear to have a slight inventory overhang issue,” he says. “The Street is definitely likely to adjust lower their earnings. Consensus earnings could probably still come down.” But he adds, “we don’t see CPO prices falling off the cliff. It’s probably not going to be as strong as the soybean price, but I don’t think we’re going to see very sudden drops.”

He notes the company is the second-largest plantation operator globally, making it more susceptible to CPO price changes. The $0.59 year-to-date low is likely to offer initial support.

金光農業資源 大馬發行15億伊債

（吉隆坡19日訊）全球第2大棕油種植公司金光農業資源（Golden Agri-Resources），首次在大馬發行伊斯蘭中期票據，價值15億令吉。

在新加坡上市的金光農業資源在文告中指出，馬來西亞是一個成熟、流動性高的伊斯蘭中期票據市場，加上熟悉棕油業極具優勢。

這是該公司總值50億令吉伊斯蘭中期票據中的其中一部分。

價值15億令吉的伊斯蘭中期票據，在這個月初發行，期限為5年，即2017年11月屆滿。投資者可得年盈利的4.35%，分期半年支付。

該票據所獲得的淨收益將會作為該公司的一般用途，同時也為公司成長做準備。

金光公司有意擴充並開發土地。

該公司總監較早前向《路透社》說：“我們可能用該基金購買新土地。”[ChinaPress]

CIMB upgrades Golden Agri to Outperform from Trading Buy. “It is a good play on the theme of CPO price recovery given its strong liquidity and high earnings exposure to the plantations business.”

The house cuts its 2012-14 CPO price forecasts by 7%-9% to US$960-US$1,000/ton ($1,172-$1,221/ton) on US soybean crops’ recent upgrade and the fading El Nino.

But it still expects CPO prices will recover on slower output growth and improving demand, forecasting spot CPO prices to rise by 23% from the current US$780/ton to a 2013 average US$960/ton, although the timing may be delayed from its previous end-2012 to 1Q13 projection if demand stays soft on global economic uncertainty or supply exceeds its forecasts.

It cuts its target to $0.80 from $0.85 after lowering FY12-14 earnings forecasts by 3%-15% on lower CPO price assumptions and higher estate costs on Indonesia’s proposal to raise minimum wages. CIMB expects FY13 earnings to improve on fresh-fruit-bunch production improvement and better China agribusiness contributions, offsetting the higher production costs. The stock is up 1.5% at $0.68, extending Thursday’s 4.7% climb.

J.P. Morgan downgraded palm oil firm Golden Agri-Resources to ‘underweight’ from ‘neutral’ and lowered its target price to S$0.50 from $0.56, on expectations it will be hurt by a muted recovery in crude palm oil (CPO) prices.

By 11:29 a.m., shares of Golden Agri were down 3.1% at $0.62, and have fallen about 4.6% since the start of the year, compared to the Straits Times Index’s 1% rise.

J.P. Morgan said it expects Golden Agri’s fourth-quarter earnings to miss expectations, and forecast a 20% quarter-on-quarter decline in core net profit to US$69 million ($84.5 million) as average CPO prices fell 23% in the period.   

It also cut its 2013 and 2014 earnings per share estimates by 10% to factor in lower CPO prices.

Indonesian plantation companies, including Golden Agri, are expected to see meaningful labor cost increase following this year’s rise in minimum wage, the brokerage said.
