Golden Agri-Resources, the world’s second-biggest palm oil producer, said fourth-quarter profit declined 93% as prices of the commodity declined.

Net income was US$53.6 million ($66.2 million) in the three months ended Dec. 31, from US$747.8 million a year earlier, the Singapore-based company said today in a statement. Revenue in the quarter gained 14% to $1.519 billion.

Golden Agri follows rival producers Sime Darby and Felda Global Ventures Holdings in reporting lower profits after palm oil prices fell 23% last year as inventories piled up and demand weakened. Palm oil, used in food and fuels, will probably drop further this year after Asian producers boosted acreage and global oilseeds supplies rose, according to Dorab Mistry, a director at Godrej International.

The company “is of the view that palm oil industry remains resilient with its robust fundamentals as demand for palm oil will continue to grow,” Chief Executive Officer Franky Widjaja said today in a statement. “Our focus for this year is to carry on with our expansion, organically and by way of acquisition.”

Shares gained 2.4% to close at 65 cents in Singapore today. The announcement was made after trading hours. The stock is unchanged this year, under-performing the 4% gain in the benchmark Straits Times index.

Golden Agri (E5H.SG) is 3.3% higher at $0.62 in strong volume, outperforming the STI's 0.1% decline. The rise could be on short-covering, says Ivy Ng, an analyst at CIMB.

SGX data show 47 million GAR shares were sold short on Monday, while 14.3 million were sold short Tuesday. She also notes the share price has corrected since its results, despite a relatively stable broader market.

The company's announcement that it and its subsidiary, PT SMART will implement a pilot project in West Kalimantan, Indonesia, on forest conservation likely isn't moving the share, she says; "it's something they've been working on for awhile; it's been discussed with investors."

Norway's sovereign wealth fund recently exited 23 palm-oil companies, likely including GAR, over concerns on deforestation. Orderbook quotes show sell orders clustered at $0.62, suggesting the stock may struggle to top its $0.625 intraday high.

Golden Agri is 3.6% lower at $0.53, extending Monday’s 2.7% decline. “It’s the bad results from Indofood Agri,” an analyst says.

Before Monday’s market open, Indofood Agri reported that 1Q13 net profit fell 75% on-year to $20 million, with the company citing lower commodity prices for key plantation crops and higher production costs and operating expenses. “People are kind of reading that across the sector,” he says, noting Golden Agri is “the bellwether of the sector.”

He notes Golden Agri’s shares also had an unexplained “pop” last week; the share ended last week up 7.6%. Golden Agri’s results are due May 13 after the market close.

Last week’s low of $0.52, also the lowest since July 2010, may offer support. Indofood Agri’s shares are down 3.1% at $1.08, extending Monday’s 2.2% drop.

Golden Agri-Resources jumped as much as 4.7% after the company posted a more than two-fold increase in quarterly net profit compared with the preceding quarter.

The company, a palm oil producer in Indonesia, said its net profit in the first three months of the year jumped 176% to US$113 million ($139.9million) from the previous quarter, though it fell 30% from a year earlier.

Improvement in the company’s China operations, selldown of inventory and lower operating expenses helped offset the seasonally lower production and soft palm oil prices.

OCBC Investment Research upgraded its rating on the shares of the company to “buy” from “hold”, with a target price of $0.63.

“While CPO (crude palm oil) prices may still remain weak in the near term, headwinds appear to be dissipating,” OCBC wrote in a note.

Despite the gains, Golden Agri was the worst index performer so far this year with a 15% decline, while the index was up nearly 2%. Shares were up 3.77% at $0.55 at 11:24 a.m.

The Straits Times Index (STI) inched up 0.3% to 3,441.83, hovering near a 5-1/2-year high of 3,447.73 hit in the previous session.

First Resources, another palm oil firm, reported a 29.9% jump in its first quarter net profit. Share price rose more than 3% to a near one-month high of $1.81.

Golden Agri (E5H.SG) is up 4.7% at $0.555 despite reporting 1Q13 net profit fell 30.4% on-year to US$112.8 million ($139.7 million). The results were within expectations at 22% of full-year forecasts, OCBC says in a note, adding net profit was up 111% on-quarter, helped by improvement in its China operations, an inventory selldown and lower operating expenses. The inventory drop to 398,000 tons, down by 122,000 tons, was a relief, it says. It upgrades GAR to Buy from Hold, keeping a $0.63 fair value.

"While CPO prices may still remain weak in the near term, headwinds appear to be dissipating; management is also remaining fairly upbeat about its prospects," it says. "Coupled with the recent fall in share price, GAR now looks relatively attractive." The stock is still down around 15% year-to-date. Nomura says the results were above its expectation, at 31% of its full-year estimate.

But Nomura plans to keeps its full-year estimates intact, viewing the excess inventory sales as unsustainable, while expecting 4Q12's supply-chain bottleneck is likely to repeat again this year and as China soy-crushing margins remain uncertain. It keeps a Neutral call with $0.65 target.

Golden Agri-Resources, the second-biggest palm plantations operator, expects to maintain profitability at its China unit as a drop in soybeans and higher selling prices improve earnings in oilseed processing.

“Currently the environment there is quite stable and therefore we should be able to continue with the positive performance that we achieved in the first quarter,” Chief Financial Officer Rafael Buhay Concepcion Jr. said in an interview.

The Singapore-based company reported first-quarter profit at its China unit of US$6 million ($7.5 million), after losses at the business in the preceding three quarters. Industry overcapacity, state imposed price caps and record soybean prices hurt earnings in 2012 at Golden Agri’s China operations and at peers such as Wilmar International.

Soybeans, which are processed into meal and oil, are down 15% from a peak of 17.89 cents a bushel reached in September. Prices may extend declines to below US$10 a bushel by July as U.S. farmers switch some acres from corn, the U.S. Soybean Export Council said in May.

“The price of beans has come down significantly and we were also able to steadily increase our selling price,” Concepcion said in the May 30 interview in Singapore. “That enabled us to improve in our performance and the first quarter in China was back to a profit.”

Golden Agri’s China unit posted a full-year loss of US$48 million in the 12 months ended Dec. 31, the company said in a Feb. 28 presentation.

The company expects China’s contribution as a%age of revenue to stay roughly the same in the next three years, Concepcion said. Golden Agri completed its first expansion of the business, since entering China in 2005, by starting a new crushing and refining plant in Tianjin last year, he said.

Golden Agri-Resources dropped nearly 2% to match a three-year low, as the company is expected to release lacklustre results later in the week, putting pressure on the index.

Golden Agri fell for the second straight day, after its subsidiary PT Sinar Mas Agro Resources and Technology Tbk announced a 28.5% drop in net profit in the first six months of the year on Wednesday.

“Assuming Golden Agri’s 2Q results follows the same trend as SMART’s, we project the group to report a net profit of US$55m-60m in 2Q13 and US$168-173m for 1H13,” CIMB said in a research note.

The company reported a net profit of US$108.1 million ($137.6 million) in the second quarter of 2012.

Golden Agri was headed for a 20% decline year to date, compared with a 2.3% rise in the Straits Times Index . The shares fell 1.9% to match Wednesday’s trough of $0.515, the lowest in more than three years.

The Straits Times Index rose half a%, after having given up some earlier gains.

Shares in Singapore Press Holdings dropped more than 4% to a 3-1/2-week low, as investors sold shares after claiming a special dividend.

Singapore-listed Golden Agri-Resources reported a plunge in its second-quarter net profit, hurt by lower palm oil prices, and said the operating environment in China remains challenging due to intense competition.

The company posted net profit of US$45 million ($57.4 million) for the three months ended June, down 58% from a year earlier. The earnings were also 60% lower than the previous quarter, mainly due to weaker production and higher plantation costs.

Golden Agri-Resources, Singapore-listed holding company of crude palm oil producer PT Sinar Mas Agro Resources and Technology (SMART), plans to build a biofuel plant in 2014 with an investment of between US$100 million ($124 million) and US$500 million, said Chief Executive Franky Widjaja. (Bisnis Indonesia)

SMART also said it booked a net profit of US$158 million in the first half, down 41.5% from last year's US$270 million on revenues that grew 9% to US$3.1 billion.
