Sembcorp Marine posted a 48% fall in third-quarter net profit to $116 million due to lower operating profit from rig building projects.

Group revenue fell 32% to $892 million compared to the same quarter last year.

Turnover for rig building fell 52%, while turnover for its ship repair division fell 13%. Meanwhile, ship conversion and offshore sector saw a 29% increase in revenue.

Looking forward, Sembcorp Marine said that competition remains keen which will affect margins.

Nonetheless, the group continues to see “continued demand for repair and life extension work for LNG carriers as well as repair and upgrading work for cruise ships and offshore vessels”.

The group has also secured contract orders worth $9.1 billion since the start of the year, growing its net order book to a record high of $12.1 billion.

These orders involve deliveries extending until 2019.

Shares of Sembcorp Marine plunged as much as 7.7% after the company reported a 48 percent fall in its third-quarter net profit mainly due to lower revenue recognition for its rig building projects.

Sembcorp reported a net profit of $115.5 million for its third quarter ended September, down from $222.5 million a year earlier. Revenue for the quarter fell
31.5% to $892.4 million.

Sembcorp shares hit as low as $4.33 on Tuesday, the weakest level since June 12. Nearly 13 million shares changed hands, 3.4 times the average full-day volume over the past 30 days.

“Sembcorp Marine is seeing strong market fundamentals and is hoping to add more work to its existing order book by end of the year. However, intense competition from shipyard with excess capacity in Korea and China are putting pressure on margins,” DMG & Partners Securities said in a report.

The broker cut its target price to $4.61 from $5.70, citing lower earnings and rising competition for Sembcorp’s shipyard operations.

SembMarine’s earnings miss masks an otherwise robust operational performance, Barclays says, noting the 3Q12 margin of 14% was significantly higher vs regional peers.

“The severe slowdown in the commercial shipbuilding industry has intensified competition in the offshore rig-building space, with regional yards aggressively bidding for offshore projects. Despite these headwinds, the Singapore rig-builders continue to deliver sector-leading margins and robust earnings. We continue to like the company for its ability to deliver best-in-class margins and returns.”

It tips near-term share price weakness as a good value opportunity, with the stock trading at 15x 2012 P/E vs its 10-year average of 16x P/E. It notes the record order wins year-to-date has driven SembMarine’s backlog to $14.8 billion, providing earnings visibility, with management highlighting rig orders’ continued positive outlook in 2012 and 2013.

It cuts its target to $6.50 from $7.00 after rolling valuations to FY13 and lowering 2012-15 earnings forecasts by an average 9% on management’s more-conservative margin guidance and cost assumption changes. It keeps an Overweight call. The stock is down 5.5% at $4.43.

SembMarine is up 1% to $4.15 get a sentiment boost amid expected broader market gains after it finalised a contract with Prosafe for a second harsh-environment accommodation semi-sub worth US$295.2 million ($362 million) following an LOI in October; Prosafe has an option for one more unit.

OCBC notes SembMarine has secured $9.48 billion worth of orders year-to-date, accounting for 99.7% of the house’s full-year order-win target. “Fundamentally, we remain confident of SembMarine’s operational capabilities, and believe that its established track record puts it in good stead to secure orders from a still buoyant industry.”

It keeps a Buy call with $5.84 fair value.

Citigroup cuts SembMarine target to $5.40 from $6.10 after lowering its 2012-13 EPS forecasts by about 4%-11% on lower margin projections. But it raises its 2014 EPS forecast by about 6% on higher repair contributions and drillship revenue recognition.

It expects earnings to bottom sharply in 2012, followed by a strong 2013-14 rebound, with 21% FY12-14 CAGR. It keeps a Buy call.
“Street concerns over its prospects are overdone. SembMarine remains a viable play on the strength of the E&P cycle and its enlarged product mix has broadened its market opportunity. With the stock trading below mid-cycle valuations, we see the recent weakness as an enhanced buying opportunity.”

It adds, the go-ahead from Sete Brasil to build its first drillship entirely in Singapore, effectively reducing the local-content requirement, is a positive, helping to address the risk of 2013-14 margin decline; “the street has not fully digested this news.”

It is upbeat on the E&P cycle, expecting it to continue into 2013, underpinned by demand for a broad mix of products. The stock is flat at $4.39.

Sembcorp Marine, through its Jurong Offshore's wholly-owned subsidiary, has secured a drillship contract worth US$806.4 million ($984.1 million) from Sete Brasil Participacoes SA (Sete Brasil).

The contract calls for the design and construction of a drillship based on Jurong Shipyard's proprietary Jurong Espadon drillship design.

The unit is scheduled for delivery no later than the third quarter of 2016.

This is the seventh unit of a series of drillships secured by the group since February 2012, SembMarine said.

SembMarine (S51.SG) is down 1.6% at $4.39, extending Monday's 2.2% fall after an accident at its Jurong Shipyard injured 89 workers. Beyond the human cost of one of Singapore's worst industrial accidents in recent times, an analyst notes the company hasn't come out with any statements on the financial impact or any insurance claims.

"It looks bad, for sure. It's just that we couldn't put a finger on the time of the delay or financial side," he says. "The bigger hit is on the reputation. How will this impact future orders? That's more critical than the single project alone. Obviously, it's a big accident."

Sembcorp Marine’s wholly-owned subsidiary Sembawang Shipyard, ushered in the new year by refitting four cruise ships in January.

Currently undergoing major upgrading works in the yard are Superstar Libra from Star Cruises and Legend of the Seas from Royal Caribbean Cruises.

The Azamara Journey, also from Royal Caribbean Cruises, completed its repairs in Sembawang Shipyard and successfully sailed on 13 January 2013 while another cruise ship, Henna, owned by HNA Group of China and managed by Star Cruises, completed its refit on 16 January 2013.

Another eight cruise ships, with total estimated sales in the region of $60 million, have been secured for refitting for the rest of the year.

Barclays says Sembcorp Marine's (S51.SG) US$596 million ($753 million) contract win from Noble Corp. (NE) is a big positive following a quiet 2Q thus far.

The house notes that this contract brings Sembcorp Marine's year-to-date order wins to $2.4 billion and it expects the company to win further orders.

Maersk Drilling and Statoil may look for further ultra-high-spec jack-ups, and Sembcorp Marine and Keppel Corp (BN4.SG) are the only yards with recent experience in this category of rigs, Barclays says.

"Hence we see this contract award emphasizing the importance the industry still places on operational and delivery track records. We remain positive on the outlook for a sustained rig-order cycle and expect Singapore yards to continue to benefit from the strong demand for offshore drilling rigs."

The house rates the stock Equal Weight with a $4.41 price target. The stock is recently up 0.9% at $4.45.

Following a strong start to the year by the Chinese yards, there were concerns that the Singapore yards were losing market share to China, Barclays writes in a note.

However, recent months have proved otherwise, it says. It notes that Sembcorp Marine (S51.SG) recently announced a US$220.5 million ($278.4 million) contract win from the leasing company of The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, in collaboration with Japan Drilling Co. Ltd, which "comes as a positive surprise as this is the first rig order from JDC in more than two years."

Barclays expects this contract to help in the company's margin turnaround later this year (4Q) and going into 2014.

"The second contract win in a week for the yard supports our view that there is still a strong demand for offshore drilling rigs and we believe a sustained rig-order cycle will continue to benefit the Singapore yards," it says.

It has an Equalweight rating and $5.10 target on the stock.

Sembcorp Marine said that its PPL Shipyard unit has secured two rig building contracts worth a total of US$417 million ($529 million) from Petroleros Oro Negro, S.A.P.I. de C.V.

In a filing to the Singapore Exchange, Sembcorp Marine said that the rigs are scheduled for delivery at end July 2015 and end of third quarter 2015.

The contracts are not expected to have any material impact on the consolidated net tangible assets and earnings per share of Sembcorp Marine for the year ending December 31, 2013, the company said.
