Tiger Air safety improvements win end to Australia flight caps
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/40686-tiger-air-safety-improvements-win-end-to-australia-flight-caps.html

Fri, 19 Oct 20:23
Tiger Airways Holdings said regulators had ended restrictions on its Australian unit after the carrier addressed safety concerns that prompted a grounding last year.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority today issued the unit with a new air operator’s certificate after it improved standards, Singapore-based Tiger Air said in a statement. The certificate has no restrictions linked to last year’s shutdown.

Tiger Australia, which competes with Qantas Airways Ltd.’s Jetstar, has named a new chief executive officer and improved training since grounding flights for about six weeks in 2011. The budget carrier was subsequently allowed to operate a limited number of flights by the regulator.

Tiger Air, part-owned by Singapore Airlines, fell 1.3% to 73.5 Singapore cents in the city-state before the announcement. It’s risen 16% this year.

The Australia unit was grounded after one of its planes came into land too low in Melbourne. The airline was already under a safety review. The order didn’t affect the carrier’s main unit in Singapore.

Tiger Airways shares up after Virgin deal, Q2 loss narrows
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/40848-tiger-airways-shares-up-after-virgin-deal-q2-loss-narrows.html

Tue, 30 Oct 12:27
Shares of Tiger Airways Holdings rose when trading resumed on Tuesday, after Virgin Australia Holdings said it will buy 60% of the Singapore budget carrier’s Australian unit for A$35 million ($44.3 million).

Tiger shares were up 2% at S$0.75 after a trading halt was lifted in Singapore.

Virgin, Australia’s No.2 carrier, will buy 60% of Tiger Australia and invest a further A$62.5 million to increase the fleet size to 35 aircraft from 11 by 2018.

“The move will allow Tiger Airways to dispose a substantial chunk of the loss making entity whilst allowing it to retain a presence in Australia,” OCBC Investment Research said in a report.

Singapore Airlines, which owns 33% of Tiger, also announced it will buy a 10% stake in Virgin Australia for A$105 million.

Separately, Tiger reported second-quarter net loss of $18.3 million, narrowing from a net loss of $49.9 million a year earlier.

Brokers say Tiger to benefit from Virgin deal
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/40869-brokers-say-tiger-to-benefit-from-virgin-deal.html

Wed, 31 Oct 12:23
Several brokers said Tiger Airways Holdings is set to benefit after Virgin Australia Holdings said it will buy 60% of the Singapore budget carrier's Australian unit for A$35 million ($44.2 million).

Tiger and Virgin Australia will team up to manage Tiger Australia. Tiger shares were flat at $0.74 on Wednesday. The stock has increased 16.5% so far this year versus the 22% gain in the FT ST Small Cap Index.

“We deem this as a longer-term positive. We think that Virgin is likely to optimise route portfolio by focusing Tiger Australia on shorter leisure routes and Virgin on longer routes better suited for its full-service product,” CIMB Research said in a report.

“We also view this as Tiger's attempt to focus on Asia's higher growth markets. Tiger Singapore is already profitable and management is committed to a breakeven in its Philippines and Indonesia associates.”

CIMB raised its target to $0.83 from $0.81 and maintained its ‘neutral’ rating on the stock.

DMG & Partners Securities said it believes the price paid by Virgin is “fair” given that Tiger Australia's book value was negative $222 million as of September. The broker upgraded it to ‘buy’ from ‘neutral’.

DBS Vickers said it views the deal as an opportunistic move by Tiger to improve its balance sheet and partner with Virgin. It raised its target price to $0.95 from $0.90 and maintained a ‘buy’ rating.

OCBC Investment Research said Tiger can dispose of a substantial chunk of its loss-making entity while allowing it to retain participation in Australia's domestic market. But OCBC said any unexpected increase in losses from Tiger's associate airlines could derail its recovery process.

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/35312/

OCBC upgrades Tiger Airways to Buy from Hold
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/41900-ocbc-upgrades-tiger-airways-to-buy-from-hold.html

Tue, 11 Dec 17:20
OCBC upgrades Tiger Airways to Buy from Hold, saying the carrier is on track for a turnaround. Tiger’s passenger traffic increased for the second straight month in November, with passengers carried up 30.1% on-year and 6.0% on-month, with the passenger load factor up by 10 percentage-points on-year and 2 percentage-points on-month at 85%, it notes.

“The group’s performance so far has been encouraging with Tiger Singapore leading the turnaround,” it says. “The tepid economic situation, which has resulted in a slowdown in premium travel demand growth, will continue to benefit low-cost carriers like Tiger especially in the ongoing peak season travel months.”

It expects Tiger’s alliance with Via.com, one of India’s largest travel networks with significant Indonesian and Philippine presence, will raise awareness for Tiger in a key market. Excluding a one-time gain from the Tiger Australia divestment, OCBC expects a modest return to profitability in FY13, following favourable operating environment developments, including lower jet-fuel prices. It keeps a $0.81 fair value. The stock is up 2.9% at $0.72.

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/36659/

Tiger rises after Q3 profit, OCBC raises target
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/42417-tiger-rises-after-q3-profit-ocbc-raises-target.html

Thu, 24 Jan 13:20
Shares of Tiger Airways Holdings rose as much as 2.7% after the Singapore budget carrier reported a third-quarter net profit of $2 million, the first time in seven quarters it made money.

Within 15 minutes of trading, Tiger shares advanced to as high as $0.77 with nearly 2 million shares traded, more than half the average full-day volume over the past 30 days.

“We view this set of results favourably as revenue growthmet our expectations, and Tiger’s first net profit validates our turnaround view for the second half of 2013,” OCBC Investment Research said in a report.

OCBC raised its target price on the stock to $0.86 from $0.81 and maintained its ‘buy’ rating.

After taking charge in August, new Group Chief Executive Koay Peng Yen struck a deal to sell a stake in its loss-making Australian unit and entered into other partnerships, but faces a big challenge in a fiercely competitive Southeast Asian market.

Virgin Australia, Tiger Deal sparks regulator concern
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/42661-virgin-australia-tiger-deal-sparks-regulator-concern.html

Thu, 7 Feb 11:46
Australia’s competition regulator Thursday expressed concerns about Virgin Australia’s (VAH.AU) move to take control of the Australian arm of Tiger Airways Holdings (J7X.SG), saying it would create a duopoly in the skies.

However, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said it could also approve the deal if a rejection led to Tiger Australia exiting the market. Tiger Australia, a budget carrier, has been struggling to regain customer confidence since its fleet was temporarily grounded in 2011 for safety breaches.

The ACCC’s views were expressed as part of a preliminary assessment of the deal ahead of a final decision due next month.

It joins antitrust regulators around the globe being put to the test by carriers attempting to combat soaring jet fuel costs and fragile consumer confidence by merging their operations to gain scale and cost efficiencies. In a significant move, US regulators in 2010 allowed Continental Airlines Inc. and UAL Corp.’s United Airlines to merge and create the world’s biggest airline on condition they gave up landing slots at airports to US rival Southwest Airlines.

Australia’s aviation market is much smaller than in the US and dominated by flag carrier Qantas Airways (QAN.AU). In 2001, the collapse of Ansett Australia underscored the challenges facing carriers seeking to take on Qantas on domestic routes.

Virgin Australia in October agreed to buy 60% of Tiger Australia for 35 million Australian dollars ($44.7 million) from Singapore’s Tiger Airways to intensify competition with Qantas, which owns low-cost carrier Jetstar.

Virgin Australia said Thursday it was reviewing the ACCC statement and preparing a response, adding it “strongly believes the proposed acquisition will increase competition in the market to the benefit of Australian consumers.”

In a statement, ACCC Chairman Rod Sims said competition risks arise from the increased ability of Qantas and Virgin Australia “to coordinate their activities once Tiger Australia is no longer operating as an independent low-cost carrier.”

Sims said Virgin’s intention to expand Tiger Australia’s fleet to 35 aircraft from the current 11 by 2018 would be looked upon favorably as it would make it harder to coordinate pricing.

“If the ACCC were to conclude that Tiger Australia would exit the market in the absence of the proposed acquisition, this would be highly relevant to our assessment,” Mr. Sims said.

Tiger Airways, in which Singapore Airlines owns a 32.7% equity stake, swung to net profit of $2 million in the quarter ended Dec. 31 from a $17.4 million loss a year earlier. However, losses at Tiger’s Australian unit widened 50% from a year earlier to $12.9 million.

Tiger Australia’s fleet was grounded by safety regulators in July 2011 for six weeks after two of its jets approached airports in Melbourne below the minimum flying altitude.

The ACCC has invited further submissions from the market and intends to make a final decision Mar 14

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/37234/

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/37305/
