There is capping / throttling. This is done by area / exchange. Some sort of limiter device has been installed which is doing auto-capping.

When a certain limit for bandwidth usage is reached for that area / exchange, the limiter kicks in and throttles down the connection.  Until the bandwidth usage drops below the set limit.

The lower / minimum limit is based on your package. Meaning, if you are on a 1M package, you may be throttled down to 30KB/s (example only). If on a 4M package, it will go down to 100KB/s (example only). I think we users can easily test this and get the correct approx figures if we want.

This is being done for international downloads. Local downloads are not affected. My tests also indicate this. As in a previous post of mine, you can use this link to see what speed you get. This should be the international download speed unlike the normal TM speedometer which is local speed.



PROBLEM

As I do a lot of customer support, I noticed that recently there seems to be a disturbing trend where it appears that TM is capping INTERNATIONAL traffic on certain accounts. This has happened for perhaps the past 1-2 weeks or so.

I initially posted this on my blog but would want to know if other people are experiencing this.



ive been experiencing the same problem of connection slowdown for almost 24 hours. ive tested with different ip's, eg. 60.50, 60.49, 60.52, 60.53, 124.82 all to no avail. ive tested my connection and noticed that ;

a) tm speedometer gave me full normal speed of 1.5 Mbps ;

b) speedtest.net speedometer gave constant 0.5 Mbps to all international servers ive tried ; singapore, UK and US

c) speedtest.net speedometer to Penang, KL and Seri Kembangan gave good, full speed of 1.5 Mbps

d) speedtest.net speedometer to Cyberjaya however gave 0.5 Mbps only

e) ping tests to international websites were around 250ms-350ms

f) a torrent download from ipt with more than 150 seeders got stuck at 0.5 Mbps only with either VPN, bolehroute or direct streamyx connection

g) upload speed to all servers anywhere were around 0.3 Mbps - 0.35 Mbps

ive concluded that something was wrong with tm's routing so ive called up their support line earlier this evening. opened up a report about this and the technician said *probably* theres something wrong with the routing since she cant event re-set my port connection; the system would not respond. below ive got some example ;

我现在不管是Megaupload还是Fileserve。。。都一样慢。。。晚上只可以跑40kbps下载。。。。。

早上可以跑到1.5Mb。。。。

不过Streamyx的人讲今晚来我家看。。。。 我已经准备了3台laptop，1台desktop等他们来测试。我也买了两个全新的spliter和一个新的modem来等他们来。

因为昨天是JB假期，他们没有上班，所以今天。。。我要看好戏。

我上个星期17号做了Report。现在他们还要检查我的Port啦，我的Cable啦。。。。

不过如果他们做“限制”的话。。。对我们很不公平。。。毕竟他们属于欺骗。。。

1Mb应该是24小时，可是现在1Mb却局限在早上一个时段。。。。

但是上中国和台湾网真的慢了不少就是了

我是1MB用户，通常download speed都是维持在80-100kb之间。不过前几天开始问题就来了，早上速度在80kb，下午速度在40-60kb，晚上速度在80kb一直到凌晨。以往speedtest是0.88mb，现在？0.4-0.6mb。

我中招了。。。 MU现在的速度维持在130KBPS. 平常都是介于450到500之间。。。 FXXX STREAMYX!

之前还以为是线路被偷，没想到是被限速了。早知道就不升级去1mb了，缴更多的费用却拿着类似以前的速度。好不划算啊！！！:@
