With sentiment aside, the news that Chelsea have failed in there bid for the Battersea Power Station, is by no means good. Now we all love Stamford Bridge, but sometimes in life you need to face facts, this is what we have to do with ‘The Bridge’. The ground is far too small to help financially meet are spending output, the ground brings in approximately £1.4m per match if the ground has its average 41 thousand attendants. Now, £1.4m doesn’t sound too bad, but the club could nearly double its profits with a 60 thousand seater ground, making around £2.1m. Thus helping the club meet its financial fair play demands, which from recent spending could be difficult to meet. There have been signs before the plans for a new stadium were announced, that the club might struggle to meet these targets as the club looked for a sponsor for the naming rights of Stamford Bridge, to try and replicate what Man City have done with the Etihad Stadium, alas no sponsor came calling.
Having a look at Europe’s largest stadiums, Chelsea are nowhere near the top, this isn’t good enough for a club who have had fantastic recent success and want to become one of the biggest clubs in the world, like a Real Madrid. They have the history (which we are making), the big name players (we might not have galacticos, but we sure do have some great players), the money (yeah, I think we have that) and lastly they have the Bernabeu, the 3rd largest stadium in the world and one of if not the best. Like I said before we need to face facts in life, at the moment we are a big club in world football, but we are not in the same bracket as a Real Madrid. Building a modern, big stadium would be a huge statement of intent, to say to the football world, we are Chelsea Football Club, we are reining European Champions and we are going nowhere. Hopefully a new ground will come along soon as it would help to be the foundations which we can build upon are recent European exploits.
Now the Blues have lost the Battersea plot, that leaves Chelsea with very limited options in which to build a new stadium, and because of the scarceness of the plots this will increase the price of these areas, as they are in high demand. Also as the few remaining plots go, the increased likelihood will be that the new ground will be out of the ‘Chelsea area’.
I know there are many fans reading this and dreading the thought of moving from Stamford Bridge, but we have to be open minded and except change. In football, evolution is happening all around us, some teams rise to success and then are extinct from recent history, while others taste success and evolve with the changing conditions to thrive in the clubs ever changing environment , these are the clubs which reign supreme for years to come, challenging for silverware left, right and centre. Now ask yourself, do you want to evolve or do you want to fade from history (like Liverpool).
Lastly, Bari has a bigger ground than us...
