Yoma Strategic Holdings said its 70% held subsidiary German Car Industries Company (GCI) has entered into a service partner agreement with Volkswagen to operate its first service centre in Myanmar.

This first service centre in Yangon is scheduled to start operations in October 2013.

The service centre currently operated by GCI will provide maintenance and repair services for Volkswagen branded vehicles, including the sale of genuine vehicle parts to existing vehicle owners. This non-exclusive service partnership with VW underlines Yoma Strategic’s strategy to bolster its automotive operations in Myanmar.

Andrew Rickards, Yoma Strategic’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “The addition of Volkswagen to our automotive portfolio strengthens our position in the country’s burgeoning automotive industry. Seizing such opportunities is especially important since Myanmar has the potential to become one of the most important automobile markets in the ASEAN region following the deregulation of the importation of cars. Although this is a non-exclusive operation, Yoma Strategic has a head start in building our relationship with Volkswagen, which will help us to better serve our new consumers.”

祐玛战略(Yoma Strategic Holdings)在截至9月30日的2Q14录得330万元盈利，1H14也转亏回盈，取得440万元净利。业绩好转主要是因2Q14的营业额从上一年同期的1,160万元提高超过一倍至2,700万元，由于住宅及土地发展权的销售额激增。住宅及土地发展权销售在2Q14及2Q13均占公司超过90%的收入。另一方面，公司预期其位于仰光的Star City城镇项目将在未来15到21个月内按进度实现4,940万元的收入。截至今天中午12时，公司的股价为0.775元，比其上个闭市价低了0.6%。

Yoma Strategic Holdings posts earnings for its second quarter ended 30 September 2013 (2Q2014) recorded a $3.3 million, on the back of a 132.4% increase in revenue to S$27.0 million.

In the previous corresponding 2Q2013 quarter, the company had posted a net loss of $4.2 million.

The revenue recorded for 2Q2014 was the highest quarterly revenue since Yoma Strategic’s listing on the Mainboard in 2006.

The group’s revenue growth was driven by the continued strong sales of residences and land development rights (LDRs) as the demand for high quality homes continues to outstrip supply.

The sales of residences and LDRs accounted for $26.4 million or approximately 97.8% of total revenue, compared to $10.8 million in 2Q2013. Out of the $26.4 million, the breakdown in sales for residences and LDRs were $11 million and $15.4 million respectively.

Singapore-listed Yoma Strategic Holdings said on Thursday it had signed a joint venture agreement with Japanese trading house Sumitomo Corp to distribute and service Hino trucks and buses in Myanmar.

Sumitomo will own 60% of the joint venture while Yoma will have 20%, the Singapore conglomerate with various businesses in Myanmar said in a statement.

First Myanmar Investment Co., a firm controlled by Yoma founder and executive chairman Serge Pun, will own the remaining 20% stake.

Hino Motors, a unit of Toyota Motor Corp, is Japan's largest manufacturer of heavy- and medium-duty trucks.

Yoma Strategic Holdings said it has formed a new investment holding arm, Yoma Agricultural & Logistics Holding (YALH), for its forays into the coffee, dairy, cold storage and logistics, and commercial vehicle leasing businesses.

For this purpose, Yoma has signed a mandate with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the member of the World Bank Group, to provide a debt and equity financing package to the company for its venture into the new business sectors.

Firstly, Yoma said it has signed an agreement with ED&F Man Holdings (EDFM), the global specialist merchant of agricultural commodities, to plant and produce lowland Robusta coffee within the group’s plantation land at the Maw Tin Estate in the Ayeyarwaddy Division of Myanmar.

Yoma and EDFM will respectively hold 85% and 15% of the coffee business which is expected to require up to US$20 million ($25.3 million) of investment over four years with the aim of planting a total of 3,700 acres of coffee by the end of the fourth year. EDFM, through its global trading network and expertise, intends to guarantee the off-take of the whole coffee crop.

Secondly, the company has agreed to form a joint-venture with First Myanmar Investment Co. (FMI) and PMM Partners (PMM) to supply UHT dairy products to the local consumer market in Myanmar. The company will hold 40% of the dairy business with FMI holding 50% and PMM holding the remaining 10%. It is intended that the group’s interests in the dairy business will be transferred to YALH.

The dairy business is expected to require an investment of up to US$46 million over the next five years, part of which will be used to purchase modern world-class UHT processing equipment.

Thirdly, Yoma has signed an agreement with Kokubu & Co. and FMI to enter the cold storage and logistics business in Myanmar.

Under the deal, two key distribution centres will be built in Myanmar and distribute agricultural, seafood and processed products. Kokubu will hold 50% of the cold chain business, Yoma will hold 30% and FMI will hold the remaining 20%. The initial capital investment for the Cold Chain Business is expected to be US$12 million. The group’s interests in the cold chain business will be transferred to YALH.

Meanwhile, Yoma says the group’s interests in Yoma Fleet will be transferred to YALH. Yoma Fleet is the group’s vehicle operating lease and rental business. In February, Yoma Fleet signed its first three contracts in February, with an aggregate order value of more than US$1.5 million placed for trucks, buses and tractors.

Yoma Strategic Holdings, a developer of Myanmar properties, will build more “upmarket” homes and boost prices by as much as 30% with plans for a school overseen by London’s Dulwich College in a Yangon suburb.

The company said today it reached an agreement with Dulwich for the international school in the Thanlyin township. Singapore-based Yoma’s site for the education facility, which will also include a local private school, is adjacent to its Star City housing development that will include 9,000 homes, according to Chief Executive Officer Andrew Rickards.

“It will attract a certain level of expatriates to live there,” Rickards said in an interview in Singapore. “Having a school next to your residential development is a big boost.”

Yoma, which gets almost all of its sales from Myanmar, is positioning itself to take advantage as the natural gas-rich Southeast Asian nation the size of Texas reconnects with the global economy after five decades of isolation during military rule.

Real estate will make up half of its revenue in five years, down from 90% now, as the company expands into new businesses including agriculture, tourism, education and automotive, Rickards said in a briefing today.

Dulwich is also opening the first British independent school in Singapore in August. The college’s alumni include novelist Raymond Chandler and Eddie George, a former Bank of England governor.

‘WELL SUSTAINED’
“The demand will be very well sustained going forward,” said Tan Ai Teng, an analyst at DBS Group Holdings Ltd., who has a buy recommendation on the stock. “It’s a very good move on the part of Yoma to put premier education institutions near their site.”

Yoma shares rose 1.4% to 72 cents as of 11:24 a.m. local time, set for the highest close in more than a month. The gain helped pare losses this year to 4%, compared with a 0.8% decline in the Singapore benchmark Straits Times Index.

Yoma is raising the specifications of the apartments at its Star City project, also in Thanlyin, with an expected increase in demand because of the new schools, Rickards said.

“We’re probably also going to build a slightly more luxurious product on the estate, partly driven by the sort of people we think would be coming to live there, now that we have Dulwich College coming,” he said.
