Koh Wee Seng, chairman of pawnbroker Maxi-Cash Financial Services and CEO of its parent company Aspial Corp, has been increasing his direct stakes in the companies.

On Feb 26, Koh purchased 5.4 million shares of jewellery retailer and property developer Aspial at 43.7 cents each on the open market, raising his direct stake in the company to 14.42%. The previous day, Koh had purchased 523,000 shares of Maxi-Cash at 49.6 cents each, increasing his direct stake in the company from 1.31% to 1.46%.

For FY ended Dec 31, 2012, Aspial reported a 21% y-o-y rise in earnings to $54.8 million, despite slower economic growth and various property- cooling measures.

Revenue was up 8% from a year earlier; the property business was boosted by contribution from the progress recognition of sales from East Village, Cardiff Residence and 8 Bassein and the final recognition of sales from Heritage East, Espira Suites, Palmera East, SOHO Life/Onan Suites, 13 Sempadan and Cavan Suites.

As for Aspial’s jewellery retailing business, despite the ongoing consolidation of retail stores, which had resulted in a net reduction of six retail stores last year, the jewellery business achieved higher revenue because of improved sales from existing retail stores.

Maxi-Cash recorded a 34% y-o-y rise in earnings to $4.15 million for the full-year ended December 2012 on the back of a 15% increase in sales to $100.5 million, driven by revenue contribution from its pawnbroking business. The group opened four new pawnshops and retail outlets in Tampines MRT, Pasir Ris MRT, Redhill MRT and Hougang Central in 4Q2012, and expects to open more outlets this year.

Elsewhere, Wee Cho Yaw, billionaire banker and chairman of United Industrial Corp (UIC), swept up 1.14 million shares at $2.85 apiece on the open market on Feb 13 and 18 through UOL Equity Investments, raising his deemed interest to 48.28%.

UIC’s earnings for FY ended Dec 31, 2012 surged 100% to $391.6 million from the previous year, led by fair-value gain on investment properties. Revenue fell 12% to $711.5 million, however, affected by lower figures from hotel operations, rental income and sales of trading properties.

Elsewhere, on Feb 15 and 26, Goh Bak Heng, CEO of Serial System, purchased 292,000 and 150,000 shares on the open market at 12.6 cents and 13 cents each respectively, raising his direct stake to 36%. Serial System is one of the largest distributors of electronic components and semiconductors in the region. For FY ended Dec 31, 2012, turnover rose 7% to $825.4 million. The sales were buoyed by higher contribution from new product lines and new customers.

However, earnings declined 29% y-o-y to $9.18 million, mainly attributable to higher distribution and administrative expenses arising from increased costs of businesses such as higher office and warehouse rental; increased staff salary; increased freight and transportation costs, owing to higher fuel and petrol costs; and the sale of more bulky items.

（新加坡8日讯）全球景气不佳，新加坡也受波及，不少人到当铺典当求现，尤其农历春节添购年节用品开销大，今年到当铺典当求现人潮比往年增加，让当地的当铺生意强强滚。

新加坡固然是东南亚经济发展重镇，金融商圈林立，同样也有当铺供民众紧急典当换现金应急。这些当铺伴随着新加坡共同成长，为部分手头不宽裕的新加坡人提供了另一种紧急资金来源管道，既保存面子，也拥有里子。

典当求现急救站

新加坡当铺多半隐身于各大商圈，典当求现的民众一旦度过“艰困期”，即赎回心爱之物，回归生活常轨。

大兴当（Maxi-Cash）在新加坡拥有最多连锁店，透过企业化经营建置完整网页，让民众选择最方便的地点典当，明亮宽敞店面完全摆脱传统狭窄昏暗环境。

新加坡另外也有银丰当及方圆集团等两家当铺业者，同样以诚恳态度、现代化设施提供超值的典当服务。

走进位于东边的巴西立地铁站旁当铺，昔日以铁杆围栏及高柜台模式并不复见。

一名准备典当金饰周转应急的民众说，如今当铺已企业化经营，店员态度和蔼可亲，不会让典当民众感受丝毫委曲或不受尊重，是他们资金短绌的急救站，也不失为短期融资求现良方。

典当物品五花八门

不可讳言，全球大环境欠佳，让新加坡经济发展受挑战，新加坡媒体报道称，新加坡圣淘沙升涛湾不少豪宅没人居住，去年21项交易中，就有15项是赔本杀出。

新加坡媒体也引述当商公会调查，今年农历春节前赴当铺典当求现民众比去年多两成，大年初三后典当人数更多出四成。

不少新加坡人认为，华人春节各项民生用品开销增加，相信是手头不宽裕的民众走进当铺求现的原因。

新加坡当铺里典当物品五花八门，戒指、项链、手表是最常见的。
