北京时间9月24日凌晨03点00分（英格兰时间9月23日20点00分），2015-16赛季英格兰联赛杯将进行第3轮的一场比赛，曼联在老特拉福德球场迎战伊普斯维奇。伊普斯维奇目前在英冠排名第5，8场英冠比赛进13球丢13球，进攻有一定办法但防守不佳。

交战纪录

两队共有56次交锋曼联28胜9平19负，在联赛杯有过两次交锋曼联1胜1负。两队上次交锋还是2002年4月的英超比赛，已经有13年半没有交手过。伊普斯维奇上次客场击败曼联，还要追溯到1984年5月的老英甲比赛。

看点1：两队替补比拼

联赛杯对于曼联是可有可无的一项赛事，主教练范加尔肯定会轮休主力，让一些替补和小将上场找感觉。此前的英超和欧冠比赛，范加尔的首发非常固定，除了后腰位置他很少做出轮换，一众替补很少获得上场机会。替补们想要获得范加尔的青睐，在英超和欧冠等重要比赛中得到上场机会，那本场必须要有好的表现才行。

伊普斯维奇在客场遇到曼联不会有太多的想法，主教练麦卡锡在赛前的新闻发布会上表示，他需要考虑全部球员，要尽可能地让全部球员都有上场机会，他还表示本场排兵布阵肯定要考虑到周末的英冠。这番话表明伊普斯维奇至少不会全主力出击。麦卡锡以前执教狼队在英超碰到曼联，做出过轮换11人让全部主力休息的功利举动，因此本场也别指望他有什么雄心壮志。

看点2：鲁尼能否找回状态

曼联其他主力需要休息，但此前因伤缺席了两场比赛，上周末才复出的鲁尼应该不需要休息，他有很大的可能连续首发。鲁尼本赛季的状态非常低迷，上周末联赛范加尔终于不再让他踢中锋而是让他踢前腰，但在前腰位置上他继续低迷，做为前场的进攻组织者，进入禁区的传球他居然一次都没有。对于鲁尼来说，他现在需要踢一场漂亮的比赛来恢复信心，面对弱旅伊普斯维奇，这是鲁尼重整旗鼓的好机会。

看点3：马夏尔能否继续进球

鉴于曼联现在锋线球员很少，马夏尔本场即便不首发，应该也会进入替补席。马夏尔加盟曼联后适应英超的速度让人吃惊，在联赛中已经打入3球，上周末比赛后范加尔就表示马夏尔现在对曼联已经非常重要。如果马夏尔本场上场且继续进球，那19岁的他在曼联的开局就太完美了。

How Manchester United should line-up against Ipswich



Surely the biggest plus to the Capital One Cup this year for Manchester United is that it can’t get any worse than it did last season?

In the early days of Louis van Gaal’s management at Old Trafford, a young but not inexperienced side was taken to Stadium MK for a second-round tie in the first cup competition of the English season.

Alas the former Netherlands coach was given a rude introduction to the ‘cupset’, as MK Dons dismantled his Red Devils, running out 4-0 winners.

Thankfully for Van Gaal his side are already past the second-round this season, due to a free-pass that came with European qualification. The manager will also have a different host of players to choose from in the third-round against Ipswich Town on Wednesday night, given that eight of the players from last year’s humiliation at MK Dons have since left the club.

With the pressures of the Champions League and Premier League occupying the main players from United, we consider just who Van Gaal should award some game-time to in Wednesday evening’s cup match at Old Trafford.

Goalkeeper: Sam Johnstone


Last season David De Gea was used in United’s only venture in this competition, but it’s about time Sam Johnstone was given the opportunity to showcase his talents. The 22-year-old has enjoyed loan spells across the divisions since joining the Red Devils in 2011, and is still to make a competitive appearance for the club.

With Victor Valdes seemingly shunned into the wilderness at Old Trafford and Sergio Romero less than impressive in his last outing, the 2-1 defeat to Swansea, youngster Johnstone is set for a chance between the sticks. A home game against lower league opponents seems the right time to give the former England U-20 international his debut.

Andreas Pereira was one of United’s more impressive youngsters during the pre-season tour of America, scoring in the 3-1 win over San Jose Earthquakes.

The Old Trafford faithful are eager to see what this young Brazilian can offer after he made just one substitute outing in the Premier League last season and, with the 19-year-old training with the first-team this term, a full debut is highly possible against Ipswich.

Too good for the reserves but not good enough for the first team?

At present, there are a dearth of game-changing options on United’s bench, especially up front, with Marouane Fellaini’s formerly potent role as a shock trooper having so far looked ineffectual against serious opposition this season.



Given how one-paced and meagre the first team’s options have looked going forward, at least prior to the introduction of Martial, there has been plenty of confusion and frustration over the reluctance to select Wilson in Van Gaal’s match day squads of late.

The newly capped England Under-21 player has plenty of pace and as a natural finisher rarely struggles to find the goal in reserve and age-group level games for club and country. In his United debut under interim manager Ryan Giggs in 2014, he scored twice against Hull City at Old Trafford.

Many fans feel that he should be given the chance to start in the League Cup against Ipswich in the hopes that he can prove himself worth for a more regular role in the Premier League.

However, like Januzaj, he may yet end up spending the rest of the season out on loan.

Guillermo Varela

David Moyes’ first signing as United manager spent last season out on loan at Real Madrid Castilla, playing 33 games for Zinedine Zidane’s side.

Now 22, the Uruguayan right-back is approaching a crossroads as a player who looks nowhere near close to becoming a regular first-team appearance maker, but who many believe still has enough promise to be of use to the squad in the future.

An appearance against Ipswich would give him a platform to show what he could bring to the team, although given Antonio Valencia’s tidy display after replacing an under-performing Darmian against Southampton, he may have to battle it out with the dependable Ecuadorian, who will also be seeking more opportunities for game time.



Nick Powell

The forgotten man. Named in United’s Champions League squad for the season, the former Crewe Alexandra prodigy has become a player lost in an ever-churning mill of negative press over injury setbacks and missed opportunities.

Although touted as a natural central midfielder by many of those who watched him rise through the ranks at Gretsy Road, it is Powell’s goal-scoring feats that have garnered him his most memorable moments and stints so far. He scored a volley from outside the box for Crewe in the 2012 League Two play-off final at Wembley, ahead of his move to United, and was often played as a striker while out on-loan at Wigan, scoring 12 goals in 42 games, including three in six Europa League fixtures.



Fitness issues have once again curtailed his progress of late, along with an acrimonious exit from Nigel Pearson’s Leicester squad last season, who cancelled his loan spell after citing attitude problems. Though few have seen much of his potential up close at United, hopes are still high that one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s final transfer punts can still come good.

Powell is another player with Championship experience in need of an opportunity. Even a brief cameo against Ipswich could be exactly the kind of encouragement he needs as he returns from surgery and another big injury.

An U-21 or academy team wildcard


It’s hard to see how too many players outside of the pack of stalking horses above will be granted a chance in the first-team this season, in the League Cup or otherwise, but given how McNair and Blackett (not to mention Reece James) appeared out of nowhere last year, anything remains possible with Van Gaal.

Sean Goss has been winning plenty of plaudits (and comparisons with Michael Carrick) for his performances in the U-21 team, and although he is only 19, the former Exeter City youngster’s controlled and composed style of play would resonate with the Dutchman’s preferred, possession-first approach.

Calling in a player from the U-21 side or below would be a bold move, however, and while there are plenty of exciting teenage talents at the club at present, selecting any of them to face Ipswich would be like playing a wildcard.
