It’s been a long time coming, but “Star Trek” fans can at last mark their calendars for the premiere of the newest TV iteration of the franchise.
CBS All Access announced Monday that “Star Trek: Discovery” will launch at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT Sunday, Sept. 24. (That time is approximate, as the premiere will follow an NFL doubleheader and “60 Minutes.”) The show will debut on the linear CBS network, with the first two episodes streaming on All Access following the over-the-air debut. Subsequent episodes will make their debuts on All Access every Sunday after that.
The show’s 15-episode first season will be split into two parts: The first eight will air weekly through Nov. 5. The show will then take a roughly two-month break and then return in January 2018 for its final seven episodes.
The premiere date will come almost two full years after “Discovery” was ordered to series in November 2015. It was initially set to premiere in January 2017, then had the date pushed back to May. Original showrunner Bryan Fuller had to step aside due to scheduling commitments to other projects, including “American Gods”; Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts took over.
Then in February, CBS CEO Les Moonves told attendees at an investor conference the show would be pushed back to “late summer, early fall” in part to accommodate a heavy post-production schedule.
“It’s important to get it right. ‘Star Trek’ is the family jewels. We’re not going to rush it in,” Moonves said at the time.
“Discovery” is the first “Trek” TV series since “Star Trek: Enterprise” ended a four-season run on UPN in 2005. It’s set about 10 years before the events of the original series and stars Sonequa Martin-Green, Michelle Yeoh, Jason Isaacs and James Frain, among others.
