Sarawak continues to be the beacon of harmony, says SUPP

MIRI: Sarawak continues to shine brightly as the beacon of unity and harmony in the country, claims the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP).

Party Information chief Adam Yii, who is Miri Mayor, said this peace in Sarawak reflects the true meaning of the Christmas season.

"On behalf of myself and my family and the city council I take this opportunity to wish all Mirians a blessed Christmas and a happy new year 2019.

"As we look back at 2018 we will realise the many developments that had taken place at the national scene especially in the political arena.

"In Sarawak we saw new developments too in the political scene.

" However, it is good to note that our state continues to remain the beacon of multiracial and multi-religious unity and harmony as we saw so clearly during the Dec 8 Miri Christmas Parade.

"As we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ this Dec 25, I hope we will use the holy day to forge togetherness with families, relatives and friends and to give thanks for the priceless peace and harmony in Sarawak.

"This should be a time of family togetherness and prayers and there is no better place to do so than the home and community where one still have families and friends to share the joy with.

"There is no greater joy than to spend Christmas with people who are close and dear," he said in his Christmas message.

Anifah to form new Sabah party

KOTA KINABALU: Former foreign minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman is set to form a new Sabah-based party with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) at the forefront of its struggle.

The Kimanis member of parliament today confirmed a statement on the matter that was issued earlier by sources close to him.

The statement also stated that the former Umno Supreme Council member did not wish to join any national party owing to his past personal experience of being handicapped when he wanted to fight for Sabah’s rights within Umno.

“The leadership of national parties tend to be more concerned with the interests of members and leaders in the peninsula, rather than the interests of the people of Sabah and Sarawak.”

The statement said Anifah, who resigned to become an independent politician on Sept 19, wanted to ensure that the original spirit and intention of MA63 was honoured and implemented sincerely as the foundation for a progressive and united Federation of Malaysia, as envisaged by the founding fathers in 1963.

“The implementation of MA63 can no longer be ignored because it is the foundation of Sabah and Sarawak to progress and enjoy certain elements of parity with its counterpart in the Federation of Malaya in terms of development,” the statement said.

“It is an aspiration of Sabahans and Sarawakians for a local based party rather than a national party to represent them in Parliament as the former knows what is best for their own people,”

English the language of knowledge, says Dr M

PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad today advised Malaysians against defending their mother tongues to the point of shunning the English language.

In a Facebook Live video, he said those who viewed English in a negative light would lose out as it was both an international language and the language of knowledge.

“In the past, it was Greek, then it was Arabic, then it was Latin and from Latin, European languages became the language of knowledge, the most common being English.

“If we want to wait until that knowledge is translated into our own languages, there’s a possibility that not everything will be translated. There is also a possibility of things getting lost in translation,” he said.

KUCHING, Dec 30 — State Reform Party (STAR) president Lina Soo today urged the Sarawak government to impose a 20 per cent sales tax on petroleum and petroleum products to fund schools and infrastructures.

She said the state government should also start a sovereign fund for the future generations from a certain percentage of the revenue collected from the sales tax.

“It is time that Sarawak starts looking after ourselves to catch up with the other states, instead of being their cash cow for as long as we remain in the Federation of Malaysia,” Soo said.

She said that the federal government has cancelled many state projects, including Batang Lupar, Batang Igan and Batang Rambungan bridges, and has also reduced allocations for Sarawak.

“Even the grass along the federal roads is not cut, posing a visibility hazard to motorists.

“No money for Sarawak but there is money for development in Peninsular Malaysia.

“Ambitious projects such as third national car, crooked bridge and infrastructure development in the peninsula are being announced,” she said.

Soo claimed that the federal government has made a negative impact on Sarawak’s economic lifeline by cutting off allocations to the state especially with regards to education, healthcare and infrastructure.

She suggested that the Oil Mining Ordinance (OMO), which was amended this year, be enforced as soon as possible and not in 2020 to generate revenue for development.

OMO compels oil companies who wish to prospect, explore and mine oil and gas resources  in Sarawak to apply for the permits and licences.

Soo urged the state government to repudiate the Petroleum Development Act (PDA) and Territorial Sea Act in the State Legislative Assembly and to propose to Parliament that both Acts be provided with additional clause to exclude Sarawak.

“This is a matter of urgency as the state has special protections not available to the states of Malaya under our Sarawak Constitution and municipal laws, Malaysia Agreement 1963, Federal Constitution, Sarawak Land Code, customary law and international law.

“This is to safeguard our oil, gas and other natural resources for our future generations,” she said.

Soo warned Sarawakians to be wary of the move by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) which recently launched its state chapter.

“This is ominous given that the federal government’s interest in Sarawak’s richest region, with billions in ringgit value of our oil and gas spirited away every year to swell the federal coffers and fund the development of Peninsular Malaysia,” she said.
