SingPost posts 5.1% fall in Q3 net to $39.5m
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/42453-singpost-posts-51-fall-in-q3-net-to-395m.html

Fri, 25 Jan 23:09
Singapore Post reported net profit for the third-quarter fell 5.1% to $39.5 million, or 1.889 cents per share, from $41.6 million, or 2.2 cents per share, a year earlier.

The company said the weaker performance was due to higher costs for the transformation and development of businesses, lower other income and higher property-related expenses.

Revenue rose 14.5% to $171 million on the back of e-commerce activities and contributions from its newly acquired printing and transactional mail business, Novation Solutions.

SingTel +0.6% despite taking loss on Warid sale
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/42525-singtel-06-despite-taking-loss-on-warid-sale.html

Wed, 30 Jan 11:22
SingTel (Z74.SG) is up 0.6% at $3.49, in line with the STI's 0.5% rise, despite the telco saying it would take an estimated loss of about $230 million to sell its entire 30% stake in Pakistan's money-losing Warid Telecom.

The investment hasn't generated returns for SingTel since it was acquired in 2007 for US$758 million ($935 million); SingTel will receive US$150 million in cash and 7.5% of proceeds from any future sale or public offering of Warid.

"We view this divestment positively, as it reduces further losses and commitments," says Ken Ang, an analyst at Phillip Securities, in a note. "Warid has performed poorly, registering negative post tax contributions every quarter since its acquisition, due to a depreciating Pakistani rupee and poor performance. The number of mobile subscribers have also been declining in recent quarters."

Orderbook quotes suggest the stock may struggle to retest its $3.50 high for January, also its highest since August.

SingTel's Warid sale rationalises portfolio: Morgan Stanley
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/42545-singtels-warid-sale-rationalises-portfolio-morgan-stanley.html

Wed, 30 Jan 16:19
While SingTel's (Z74.SG) sale of its 30% stake in Pakistan's Warid Telecom for US$150 million ($185 million) will lead to a book loss, the transaction continues to rationalise the group's asset portfolio as it sells non-core assets and likely won't adversely affect dividends as the payout policy applies to recurring net income, Morgan Stanley says.

It keeps an Overweight call. "At 14x 2014e P/E and with a dividend yield of around 5%, we believe the stock is attractively valued, especially with its operational outlook in its four key markets improving."

The stock is up 0.9% at $3.50.

SingTel flat despite Bharti 3Q13 net profit falling 72%
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/42587-singtel-flat-despite-bharti-3q13-net-profit-falling-72.html

Fri, 1 Feb 16:31
SingTel (Z74.SG) is flat at $3.50, barely budging despite its 32%-owned associate Bharti (532454.BY) reporting its fiscal-3Q13 net profit dropped 72% on-year to INR2.84 billion ($66 million), sharply below the INR7.96 billion average forecast from a Dow Jones poll.

"We have been paring down our expectations for Bharti," says Carey Wong, an analyst at OCBC. "The Singapore market is also still quite filled with liquidity and I think most people are of the view that with Chinese New Year coming, we could still have more upside. It's unlikely to fall drastically."

He says he's been paring back expectations for SingTel's associates, noting the Indonesian associate's earnings have also eroded, with competition coming in. Wholly-owned Australian unit Optus will also be closely watched, he says. "We're actually forecasting for the associate earnings to drop at least 10% on-year," he says.

SingTel profit drops 8.3% on Optus restructure, Globe charge
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/42747-singtel-profit-drops-83-on-optus-restructure-globe-charge.html

Thu, 14 Feb 11:11
Singapore Telecommunications, Southeast Asia’s biggest phone company, said third-quarter profit fell 8.3% on charges from its Australian and Philippine businesses.

Net income dropped to $827 million in the three months ended December, Singapore-based SingTel said in a statement today. That missed the $907 million average of four analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg and follows charges at its Globe business in the Philippines and costs associated with restructuring its Optus unit in Australia.

SingTel is revamping Optus and accelerating the roll out of a faster Australian mobile network as mounting competition crimps growth at its biggest unit by sales. Growth in Singapore is slowing as the nation’s currency appreciated against the Indonesian rupiah and the Thai baht last year and undermined the value of earnings from regional affiliates.

“In Australia the competition is an issue and in Singapore it’s a mixed bag,” said Ramakrishna Maruvada, an analyst at Daiwa Securities Group Inc. in Singapore. “There’s no change in the underlying trends here.”

SingTel shares fell 1.4% to $3.55 at 9:32 a.m. in the city state, the biggest decline since Dec. 24. The benchmark Straits Times Index slipped 0.2%. The stock has gained 15% over the past year, compared with a 10% increase in the benchmark.

The company affirmed a November forecast that full-year sales would fall by a “low-single digit level” because of declines at Optus. Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation will be “stable,” the company said.

Telstra competition
“The performance of the group demonstrates the resilience of our core operations,” Chief Executive Officer Chua Sock Koong said in a statement.

Third-quarter Ebitda at Optus, Australia’s second-largest phone company, rose 2.6% to A$576 million ($736 million). Revenue fell 5.7%. The unit is expanding fourth- generation services as Telstra Corp. lures customers with a larger and faster 4G network.

Ebitda from Singapore, where the former government agency has about 47% of the mobile-phone market, rose 1.4% to $531 million. The division accounted for about half of SingTel’s operating income last year.

The company took one time charges worth $67 million for changes at Optus and an upgrade to Globe’s network.

Bharti slumps
The earnings contribution from regional associates rose 1.2% to $455 million in the quarter as strong results from its Indonesian and Thai affiliates limited the impact of weaker results in India, the company said.

The pretax earnings contribution from Indian affiliate Bharti Airtel slumped 46% to $70 million. Bharti on Feb 1 reported earnings that missed analyst estimates after a weaker rupee boosted finance and network equipment costs.

SingTel owns all of its Singapore and Australian phone businesses in addition to minority stakes in six other mobile operators with 473 million customers in more than 20 countries in Asia and Africa.

The company last month agreed to sell its entire 30% stake in Warid Telecom (Private) Ltd. to Warid Telecom Pakistan LLC for $185 million. The Singaporean company will also have a right to receive a 7.5% share of net proceeds from any future sale, public offering or merger.

The company on Jan 25 submitted interest for telecommunications licenses in Myanmar with local partners.

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/37275/

SingTel prefers mobile in seeking Myanmar access
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/42754-singtel-prefers-mobile-in-seeking-myanmar-access.html

Fri, 15 Feb 08:52
Singapore Telecommunications, Southeast Asia’s biggest phone company, wants to focus on wireless services in Myanmar as it vies for the right to operate in one of the world’s last untapped mobile markets.

SingTel sent in its expression of interest for a phone license in the nation last month and is awaiting further details on the bidding process and terms of the permit, Chief Executive Officer Chua Sock Koong said in a Bloomberg Television interview with Haslinda Amin yesterday.

“Looking at the experience in other emerging markets, the mobile solution appears to be a more cost effective, a faster solution to provide communications infrastructure to the masses, particularly in the rural areas, very quickly,” she said. “While the market potential is very attractive, we would need to understand what the terms of the license issuance would be.”

SingTel, which owns stakes in the biggest mobile-phone companies in Asian emerging markets including Thailand, Indonesia and India, is seeking a foothold in a nation where only 9% of the country’s 64 million people have handsets. The nation’s fixed-line penetration rate is about 1%, the government said last month.

The nation wants to boost telecommunications coverage to as much as 80% of the country by 2016, the government said last month. That’s up from 5.44 million mobile-phone subscribers as of December. In SingTel’s home base in Singapore, there are more subscriptions than people.

SingTel said it will jointly bid with Myanmar partners.

‘Quite Exponential’
“The growth is going to be quite exponential, looking at how Asians use mobile phones,” said Carey Wong, a Singapore- based analyst at OCBC Investment Research Pte. “The challenge is consumer education. Initial sales won’t be great but once it takes off, it’s a developing market for them.”

Still, SingTel faces competition for the two Myanmar licenses the government plans to award by June. Malaysia’s Axiata Group Bhd., Singapore’s ST Telemedia Pte and Norway’s Telenor ASA were among phone operators that indicated their interest in the licenses.

For mobile operators, developing a network in Myanmar would require “almost building from scratch” with base stations and other infrastructure, said Sachin Gupta, a Singapore-based senior analyst at Nomura Holdings Inc. Gupta’s team was ranked first for telecommunications research in Asia by Institutional Investor last year.

Profit Decline
SingTel said yesterday third-quarter profit fell 8.3% on charges from its Australia and Philippine businesses, as well as a stronger Singapore dollar that eroded earnings from its regional operations.

The company’s shares fell 2.8% to $3.50 yesterday at the close in Singapore, the biggest decline in almost five months. That pared the gain in the past year to 13%, compared with the 10% increase in Singapore’s benchmark Straits Times Index.

“Singapore is already a mature market, Australia is even more so,” Wong at OCBC said. “If they can get into an untapped market like Myanmar, that will do wonders.”

For much of the past decade, mobile phones have been out of reach for most Myanmar consumers. When first introduced in 2001, the cost of activating a phone using the global system for mobile communications standard, or GSM, cost about 4.5 million kyat ($6,446). The price has fallen to about 200,000 kyat for a GSM chip, according to prices at phone vendors in Yangon.

Phone Affordability
Kyaw Min Tun, who earns about 250,000 kyat a month driving a taxi in Yangon, said prices would have to fall to 50,000 kyat before he could buy a mobile phone for his wife. The father of three, who bought a phone last year when chip activation prices were reduced, said the government should earn more from usage fees rather than on the price of the chip to make cellular phones more affordable.

For SingTel’s Chua, 55, venturing into Myanmar would add to her overseas footprint that includes Australia’s second-biggest phone company and stakes in six mobile operators.

“Myanmar is a market that a lot of operators are looking at,” she said. There’s “certainly a lot of potential. How attractive an investment in the telecoms industry is, would depend on, to a large extent, the regulatory environment.”

SingTel, Amdocs open joint development centre in Israel
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/42973-singtel-amdocs-open-joint-development-centre-in-israel.html

Mon, 4 Mar 12:44
Singapore Telecommunications (STEL.SI) and Amdocs (DOX.N), a software provider for telecom companies, have opened a  development centre in Israel as part of SingTel's investment in new technology.

SingTel said its initial focus will be on voice and facial recognition as well as systems that enable mobile and Wi-Fi networks to work more efficiently.

"More and more mobile customers are using mobile devices for more than just communications," said Allen Lew, chief executive of SingTel's digital life group. "In our business it’s not enough to be up to date, we have to be up to tomorrow."

This will be SingTel's third so-called "LifeLabs" in addition to similar centres in Singapore and Boston.

Lew said SingTel has a corporate venture fund of $200 million and part of this will be dedicated to Israel.

SingTel will also invest in Israeli start-ups, fund academic and research institutes and collaborate with incubators and angel investors to find interesting technologies.

Amdocs Chief Executive Eli Gelman said the new centre would help Israeli technology to reach the Asian market.

Amdocs, which had revenue of US$3.2 billion ($4 billion) in fiscal 2012, provides revenue management, customer call centres, provisioning and other software for communications firms.

Amdocs already has a similar centre with AT&T (T.N) but Gelman said there would not be conflicts of interest as the two operators do not compete in any markets.

SingTel has already invested in two Israeli start-ups and last year acquired mobile advertising company Amobee, which has a technology centre in Israel.

SingTel satellite unit worth as much as $2.5b, Nomura says
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/43161-singtel-satellite-unit-worth-as-much-as-25b-nomura-says.html

Mon, 18 Mar 15:46
Singapore Telecommunications, southeast Asia’s largest phone company, said it was reviewing its Optus Satellite unit in Australia, which Nomura Holdings Inc. said may be worth A$2 billion ($2.5 billion) if sold.

SingTel, as the carrier is known, hired Credit Suisse Group AG and Morgan Stanley as advisers, the Singapore-based company said in a regulatory statement. The business had revenue of A$319 million last financial year, it said.

Typical operating margins at satellite telecommunications companies are 80% of sales, and the carriers are typically valued at six times to eight times earnings, said Sachin Gupta, an analyst at Nomura in Singapore. That would put a price tag of as much A$2.04 billion on the Optus business based on its sales, he said.

“It’s one of their more profitable businesses,” Gupta said by phone today. “SingTel continuously reviews ways of monetizing these assets at the right time and the right price.”

Takeovers of satellite companies globally over the past five years have taken place at median multiples of 2.8 times revenue and 6.1 times earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Comment on the value of the business is premature, Michele Batchelor, a spokeswoman for SingTel, said by phone from Singapore. “We’re just reviewing it,” she said. “Possibly nothing could actually happen.”

The Optus Satellite unit has five satellites in orbit with a sixth to be launched this year, SingTel said today.

The business signed a five-year, A$200 million deal in 2011 to provide satellite support to NBN Co., a government-owned company that’s building a A$37.4 billion national broadband network in Australia, according to a July 2011 presentation.

SingTel stands to reap forex gain in any Optus Satellite sale
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/43168-singtel-stands-to-reap-forex-gain-in-any-optus-satellite-sale.html

Tue, 19 Mar 17:20
Singapore Telecommunications stands to benefit from a 45% rise in the Australian dollar against its home currency in any sale of the Optus Satellite division it bought in 2001.

Australian dollar revenue at the unit has increased 44% since the unit was bought, while sales have more than doubled in Singapore dollars. The unit of Southeast Asia’s largest phone company may now be worth as much as A$2 billion ($2.6 billion), Nomura Holdings Inc. estimates.

SingTel, as the Singapore-based company is known, said yesterday that it had appointed Credit Suisse Group AG and Morgan Stanley to conduct a strategic review of the unit. Potential buyers include European and north American satellite companies, such as Intelsat Global Holdings SA, Eutelsat SA, SES SA, and Inmarsat Plc, as well as infrastructure funds, said Jeffrey Tan, an analyst at OSK Holdings Bhd.

“Those names are trying to widen their footprint in Asia,” he said by phone from Kuala Lumpur. “The Asian satellite operators are busy ramping up their own capacity” so are less credible buyers, he said.

Optus Satellite’s revenue was A$222 million during its 2001 financial year, according to statements filed during Optus’s takeover by SingTel. That was worth $199 million when the proposal was announced on March 26, 2001.

The A$319 million of revenues the division recorded in 2012 is now worth $414 million at current exchange rates, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Aussie gains
The Australian dollar traded at about 1.297 dollars as of 3:05 p.m. Tokyo time, about 45% more than on the day Singtel announced its A$17 billion ($22.1 billion) takeover proposal for Cable & Wireless Optus, which included the satellite business.

“No decision has been reached on the future plans for the business,” Michele Batchelor, a spokeswoman for SingTel, said by e-mail. “The Optus Satellite business remains a strong performer and good investment.”

A sale will face hurdles because of the national security implications of selling satellites that carry Australia’s defense communications, said Simon Morris, a Melbourne-based partner with Corrs Chambers Westgarth who’s given legal advice on cross-border transactions. It would also need to be approved under US rules on the export of satellite technology.

Defense signals
“Everyone reads the headlines saying ‘The next war’s going to be an IT war’,” he said by phone. “In that sense it’s understandable why there’d be concern over anything that relates to communications or IT.”

Approval of the deal would pass through the Foreign Investment Review Board, a government agency that approves overseas purchases of Australian assets, Morris said. While it probably wouldn’t need a separate defense review, as relevant government agencies are consulted as part of the Board’s usual process, it would attract more scrutiny because of the nature of the business, he said.

“Anything that is defense-related, there’d be another layer over that,” he said. That would reflect “China-type concerns.”

Huawei Technologies Co., China’s largest maker of telecommunications equipment, has been excluded from public tenders on a state-owned national broadband network being built in Australia. The decision was taken “in the national interest,” Prime Minister Julia Gillard said last March.

Luke Coleman, a Sydney-based spokesmen for Huawei, declined to comment.

‘Cyber intrusions’
Optus Satellite’s C1 orbiter carries communications for Australia’s military, including secure messages and imagery that’s sent to troops out of sight of Australia’s coast, according to a 2003 statement by the country’s defense minister. Sharon Akinyi, a spokeswoman for the Australian Department of Defence, said by e-mail that she had no immediate comment on current military usage of the satellite.

Cyber security has become a sticking point in bilateral talks between China and the US National Security Adviser Thomas Donilon said March 12.

“Cyber intrusions emanating from China at a very large scale” are threatening to derail US President Barack Obama’s efforts to improve ties between the countries, Donilon said. Such accusations were groundless and China itself is a victim of hacking attacks, Premier Li Keqiang said March 18.

“The scale of certain countries’ cyber operations and the nature and level of those intrusions have been substantial,” Ross Babbage, a Canberra-based security consultant and former Australian defense adviser, said by phone. “This has not facilitated trust in foreign investment.”

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/37964/

SingTel's Optus wins 4G spectrum in Australia
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/43765-singtels-optus-win-4g-spectrum-in-australia.html

Tue, 7 May 11:35
SingTel’s Optus has confirmed its success in bidding for 4G 700 MHz and 2.5 GHz spectrum, as announced today by the Australian Communications Media Authority (ACMA).

Optus and Telstra were two of three telcos to win 4G spectrum licenses at close to A$2 billion ($2.5 billion) combined, the Australian Communications Media Authority (ACMA) announced on Tuesday, following an auction that lasted several weeks.

Optus successfully bid for 2 x10 MHz of paired spectrum in the 700 MHz band nationally and 2 X 20 MHz of paired spectrum in the 2.5 GHz band for a total amount of A$649 million, reflecting the reserve price for both spectrum bands.

Kevin Russell, Chief Executive Officer, Consumer Australia and Chief Country Officer, said, “Optus is pleased to have secured the additional spectrum we wanted to enable us to deliver a brilliant network experience for our customers. The spectrum Optus has acquired in the 700 MHz band will provide stronger 4G coverage across both metropolitan and regional Australia, allowing us to expand our 4G services to more customers than ever before. The additional spectrum purchased in the 2.5 GHz band, when combined with our already substantial holdings in 2.3 GHz, will enable Optus to provide unparalleled network capacity for 4G data services to our metropolitan customers.”

Optus’ approach reflects the growing global trend for multi-band 4G networks, which combines low band 4G frequency for strong coverage with high band spectrum to increase network capacity. With a variety of bands and different Long Term Evolution (LTE) technologies, Optus will gain the flexibility needed to deal with the growing demand for additional capacity and faster network speeds.

Russell said, “Today’s announcement means Optus is well placed to execute a major combined network rollout that will deliver a strong and sustainable business moving forward.

“We now have the right mix of spectrum and network components to ensure a brilliant customer experience that delivers extensive coverage and super-fast speeds.”

The Optus mobile network incorporates 2G, 3G and 4G technologies with Optus’ current 3G coverage reaching over 97% of the population. In April 2012, Optus switched on 4G services in Newcastle and has since rolled out 4G sites in metro and suburban areas of Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Adelaide, the Sunshine Coast, the Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Byron Bay and Coffs Harbour.

SingTel's Q4 profit falls 33% to $868mil on stake sale, taxes
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/43893-singtels-q4-profit-falls-33-to-868mil-on-stake-sale-taxes.html

Wed, 15 May 08:41
Singapore Telecommunications, Southeast Asia’s biggest phone company, reported fourth-quarter profit fell 33% after taking a loss on a stake sale and paying higher taxes.

Net income declined to $868 million in the three months ended March from $1.29 billion a year earlier, Singapore-based SingTel said in a statement today. Sales fell 6.3% to $4.5 billion.

Higher earnings from SingTel’s affiliates in Indonesia and Thailand limited the impact of a falling contribution from Bharti Airtel in India, which posted a 49% drop in profit on higher interest and network costs. The Singapore phone company expanded fourth-generation services in the city-state in April and its Optus unit bought airwaves in Australia last week as they expand mobile networks to compete better.

The company said revenue this year will be little changed while earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation will rise by a “low single digit level”.

SingTel shares gained 1.8% to close at $3.99 in Singapore yesterday. The stock has climbed 21% this year, compared with a 8.4% advance in the benchmark Straits Times Index.

SingTel in March completed the sale of its 30% stake in Warid Telecom (Private) for US$150 million ($186 million) and will receive a 7.5% share of the net proceeds from any future sale, public offering or merger. It took a loss of $225 million from the deal.

The company had a one-time tax credit of $270 million last year from recognising an increase in the value of an asset transferred to an associate.

SingTel to spend $2b on acquisitions as profit drops: Update
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/43914-singtel-to-spend-2b-on-acquisitions-as-profit-drops-update.html

Wed, 15 May 20:15
Singapore Telecommunications, Southeast Asia’s biggest phone company, plans to spend $2 billion within three years on acquisitions to boost growth after posting a drop in profit.

The company will focus on digital operations, including mobile advertising, and may increase stakes in regional associates, SingTel said in a filing. Net income fell 33% to $868 million in the fourth quarter ended March, after the carrier took a loss on a stake sale and paid higher taxes.

SingTel’s expansion into Southeast Asian mobile-phone markets, including a stake in Thailand’s Advance Info Service Pcl, is limiting the effect of slowing growth at Indian associate Bharti Airtel and its Optus unit in Australia. Excluding one-time items, profit fell 2% to $1 billion in the quarter, the Singapore-based company said.

“SingTel has exposure to Indonesia, Thailand and Philippines; these are all growing markets,” said Kelvin Goh, an analyst at CIMB Securities Sdn in Kuala Lumpur. “There’s no guaranteed returns to the huge investment in the digital business. There could be startup losses.”

The carrier owns stakes in Indonesia’s PT Telekomunikasi Selular and Globe Telecom Inc. in the Philippines.

Group revenue this year will be little changed while earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization will rise by a “low single-digit level,” SingTel said. The company has also been investing to improve its core business and to create the next growth engine in the digital space.

STARUP LOSSES
SingTel shares closed unchanged at $3.99 in Singapore. The stock has climbed 21% this year, compared with an 8.7% advance in the benchmark Straits Times Index.

The company spent about US$400 million last year on acquisitions in the digital business, Chief Executive Officer Chua Sock Koong said. In March 2012, SingTel agreed to buy Amobee Inc. for us$321 million to expand into mobile advertising.

“In this investment phase, we would expect to see startup losses,” Chua told a briefing today. “We’re going to see the business grow very strongly.”

The carrier made or completed 13 acquisitions valued at about US$665 million in 2012, almost double the $344 million spent in 2011, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. SingTel’s largest ever deal is the 2001 purchase of Optus from Cable & Wireless Plc for US$9.7 billion. SingTel had cash and near-cash of $911 million as of March 31, the company said today.

INCREASED DIVIDEND
Singapore’s biggest mobile phone operator raised its final dividend by 11% to 10 cents a share as it targets a payout range between 60% and 75%, SingTel said.

SingTel in March completed the sale of its 30% stake in Warid Telecom (Private) for US$150 million and will receive a 7.5% share of the net proceeds from any future sale, public offering or merger. It took a loss of S$225 million from the deal.

The company had a one-time tax credit of $270 million last year from recognizing an increase in the value of an asset transferred to an associate.

AUSTRALIAN SALES
Fourth-quarter Ebitda at Optus, Australia’s second-largest phone company, rose 3.4% to A$700 million ($863 million). Revenue fell 5.4%. The unit agreed to pay A$649 million for an allocation of airwaves to build up its wireless network to attract more customers from Telstra Corp. and other competitors.

SingTel made 62% of its sales in Australia during the quarter.

The earnings contribution from regional associates rose 3.2% to $540 million in the quarter as strong results from Indonesia and Thailand limited the effect of weaker results at Bharti, the company said.

The pretax earnings contribution from Bharti slumped 31% to $96 million. Bharti on May 2 reported earnings that missed analyst estimates after a weaker rupee increased interest payments and network equipment costs.

SingTel owns all of its Singapore and Australian phone businesses in addition to minority stakes in five other mobile operators with 468 million customers in countries in Asia and Africa. That excludes those from Warid since it was sold.

The company and its partners were among 12 applicants that will be able to submit bids by June 3 for two telecommunications licenses in Myanmar. The winners will be announced by June 27, according to the Myanmar government.

Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse Group AG will offer a highly-leveraged debt package to help sell Optus’s satellite division, according to three people familiar with the matter.

The banks, which were hired in March to study options for the unit, are prepared to lend buyers more than six times Optus Satellite’s Ebitda, two of the people said. The sale could fetch A$2 billion, according to Nomura Holdings Inc.

SingTel's Optus to roll-out multi-band 4G network plans
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/43947-singtels-optus-to-roll-out-multi-band-4g-network-plans.html

Mon, 20 May 10:42
SingTel’s Optus has unveiled its network plans for the coming year, with a number of major initiatives that will improve the coverage, speed and capacity of its 4G network, and enhance the strength and consistency of its 3G network.

Optus today announced the launch of its TD-LTE network in Canberra, with a customer trial of the first TD-LTE compatible product, the Optus 4G Dual band dongle and WiFi modem.

Currently, 4G networks in Australia run on FD-LTE, which uses two separate frequency channels, one for data traveling in each direction. TD-LTE is a new flavour of 4G technology, where the upload and download of data happens on the same frequency, but at different times.

The combined 4G TD 2300 MHz/FD-LTE 1800 MHz networks referred to as Optus’ 4G Dual Band Network will be available to customers using 4G Dual Band Devices, with the first of those devices, mobile broadband modems, available from early June.

Optus’ network rollout this year will also include preparing its mobile network for the new 700 MHz and 2500 MHz spectrum it acquired in the recent auction.

Optus has now upgraded more than 4,000 3G sites nationally and launched 4G in five state capitals, as well as several major regional centres like the Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay.

Optus said it has upgraded more than 4,000 3G sites nationally and launched 4G in five state capitals, as well as several major regional centres like the Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay.

Optus' 3G coverage currently reaches 98 per cent of the Australian population.
