SingTel's Optus to roll-out multi-band 4G network plans
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/43947-singtels-optus-to-roll-out-multi-band-4g-network-plans.html

Mon, 20 May 10:42
SingTel’s Optus has unveiled its network plans for the coming year, with a number of major initiatives that will improve the coverage, speed and capacity of its 4G network, and enhance the strength and consistency of its 3G network.

Optus today announced the launch of its TD-LTE network in Canberra, with a customer trial of the first TD-LTE compatible product, the Optus 4G Dual band dongle and WiFi modem.

Currently, 4G networks in Australia run on FD-LTE, which uses two separate frequency channels, one for data traveling in each direction. TD-LTE is a new flavour of 4G technology, where the upload and download of data happens on the same frequency, but at different times.

The combined 4G TD 2300 MHz/FD-LTE 1800 MHz networks referred to as Optus’ 4G Dual Band Network will be available to customers using 4G Dual Band Devices, with the first of those devices, mobile broadband modems, available from early June.

Optus’ network rollout this year will also include preparing its mobile network for the new 700 MHz and 2500 MHz spectrum it acquired in the recent auction.

Optus has now upgraded more than 4,000 3G sites nationally and launched 4G in five state capitals, as well as several major regional centres like the Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay.

Optus said it has upgraded more than 4,000 3G sites nationally and launched 4G in five state capitals, as well as several major regional centres like the Gold Coast, Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay.

Optus' 3G coverage currently reaches 98 per cent of the Australian population.

SingTel dips on broker downgrade
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/43980-singtel-dips-on-broker-downgrade.html

Tue, 21 May 14:35
Singapore shares edged down, with Singapore Telecommunications declining 2% after OCBC cut its rating on the sector.

“In the search for yield, telco stocks have done very well, rising some 14% to 26% year to date, versus the STI’s 9% climb,” OCBC said in a report.

“However, given the still-muted outlook, we believe that the share prices have run up too much, too quickly, and this has driven yields down to below 5%.”

It downgraded the sector to “neutral” from “overweight”.

The brokerage noted that with the exception of M1, which expects to see moderate earnings growth this year, both SingTel and StarHub were muted in their outlook.

The Straits Times index lost 0.6% to 3,433.15, while MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan shed 0.2%.

Shares of CapitaLand fell as much as 2.4% to their lowest in nearly two weeks after the property developer announced plans to raise up to US$520 million ($653 million) in convertible bonds due 2020.

SingTel said to start Optus Satellite sale seeking $2.4b
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/44080-singtel-said-to-start-optus-satellite-sale-seeking-24b.html

Tue, 28 May 16:00
Singapore Telecommunications, Southeast Asia’s biggest phone company, started the sale of its Australian satellite unit and is seeking more than A$2 billion ($2.4 billion), three people with knowledge of the matter said.

SingTel approached potential buyers with information on the Optus Satellite unit today, two of the people said, asking not to be identified as the information is private. Bain Capital LLC, Carlyle Group LP and Blackstone Group LP are among private equity firms evaluating possible bids for Optus Satellite, three people familiar with the deliberations said.

With five spacecraft in orbit, Optus Satellite provides television, radio, phone, Internet data and military signals to Australia, New Zealand, and parts of the Antarctic, according to the website of its parent company, Optus. SingTel, as the Singapore-based group is known, acquired the satellite unit as part of its US$9.69 billion ($12.3 billion) takeover of Optus, Australia’s second- largest phone company, in 2001.

SingTel is selling the satellite division as it chases new sources of growth amid slowing sales in Australia and Singapore. Divesting the division, which had revenue of A$319 million in the year ended March 2012, would help finance the $2 billion of acquisitions that SingTel is planning. The company hasn’t reported separate earnings figures for Optus Satellite since the 2001 takeover.

Typical operating margins at satellite telecommunications companies are 80% of sales, and the carriers are typically valued at six times to eight times earnings, Sachin Gupta, an analyst at Nomura Holdings Inc. in Singapore, said in March. That would put a price tag of as much as A$2.04 billion on the Optus business based on its sales, he estimated.

DEBT PACKAGE
“We are conducting a strategic review of our Optus Satelitte business and will make an appropriate announcement in the event of a material development arising from the review,” said Michele Batchelor, a spokeswoman for SingTel. Spokesmen for Bain, Carlyle and Blackstone declined to comment.

Credit Suisse Group AG and Morgan Stanley, hired by SingTel in March to study options for Optus Satellite, are offering prospective buyers a debt package that may help attract bids, people with knowledge of the matter said this month. The banks may lend more than six times Optus Satellite’s earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, according to these people.

Optus Satellite broadcasts signals to more than two million Australian households and companies and will launch a sixth satellite this year, according to SingTel. Its customers include state-owned Australian Broadcasting Corp., the Foxtel joint venture between Telstra Corp. and News Corp., and Australia’s Department of Defence.

KKR, Carlyle said to eye bids for SingTel Australia arm
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/44087-kkr-carlyle-said-to-eye-bids-for-singtel-australia-arm.html

Wed, 29 May 10:34
SingTel Private equity firms KKR and Carlyle Group are among the suitors lining up bids for Singapore Telecommunications Ltd’s Australian arm, Optus Satellite, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.

France’s Eutelsat Communications SA is also expected to bid, the people said, with SingTel valuing the business at more than A$2 billion ($2.45 billion).

Eutelsat, KKR & Co and Carlyle have each lined up banks to work with during the auction, according to the people familiar with the matter.

SingTel, whose majority owner is Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings, sent out financial information to interested bidders on Monday, with a first round bid deadline set June 14, one of the people said.

The company announced a strategic review of the business in March. SingTel’s Optus business sells TV, telephony and broadband services to more than 2 million subscribers in Australia and New Zealand.

Eutelsat was not immediately available for comment. KKR and Carlyle declined to comment.

Barclays keeps SingTel at Overweight; $4.00 target
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/44132-barclays-keeps-singtel-at-overweight-400-target.html

Fri, 31 May 16:23
Barclays keeps SingTel (Z74.SG) at Overweight with a $4.00 target price after the house hosted management in meetings with institutional investors in Europe earlier this week.

One of the highlights of the meeting was that the management put the flagged $2 billion investments into the 'Digital Life' strategy in context: "a) it's a three-year plan and even at that, not a commitment to spend; (b) compares with network investments that have been guided for S$2.5 billion for a single year in FY14. Management indicated strict discipline around metrics and milestones in each case as driving further investment or exits," says the house.

It also notes that investor attention on the associates focused mainly on Bharti Airtel (532454.BY); management were positive in their outlook on the back of improving pricing climate and lower dealer commissions as competitive intensity improves. The stock is down 0.5% at $3.76.

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/39444/

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/39602/

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/39693/

Eutelsat, KKR said to place bids for SingTel's Australia unit: Update
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/44319-eutelsat-kkr-said-to-place-bids-for-singtels-australia-unit-update.html

Mon, 17 Jun 14:59
France’s Eutelsat Communications SA and U.S. private equity firm KKR & Co are among the suitors to place first-round bids for Singapore Telecommunications Ltd’s Australian satellite unit, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said.

SingTel, Southeast Asia’s largest telecom operator, values the satellite business of its Australian unit Optus at more than A$2 billion ($2.4 billion), and has put it on sale as it battles tepid growth in its key markets of Singapore and Australia.

Britain’s Inmarsat, Blackstone Group and Carlyle Group are among the other suitors to submit bids ahead of the Friday deadline, the person told Reuters.

The deal pits strategic bidders against buyout firms in Australia’s third-biggest M&A deal this year, according to Thomson Reuters data.

SingTel, controlled by Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings, sent financial information to bidders in May after announcing a strategic review of the business in March. Optus sells TV, telephony and broadband services to more than 2 million subscribers in Australia and New Zealand.

In terms of Australia M&A activity this year, the deal ranks behind the acquisition of Port Botany and Port Kembla by Industry Funds Management, and the sale of stakes in Australia power companies to State Grid Corp of China, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Funds raised from the sale would help SingTel plough cash into faster-growing businesses.

Other bidders to express interest include, Asia Satellite Telecommunications Holdings, Intelsat, Sky Perfect Jsat Holdings Inc, Australia’s NewSat and SES, the source said.

Blackstone, Carlyle, KKR, Intelsat, SES and SingTel declined comment. Eutelsat, Inmarsat, AsiaSat, JSat and NewSat did not reply to emails seeking comments. The source declined to be identified as the sale process is confidential.

The suitors are attracted to the steady cashflow generated by the business as well as the low capital expenditure required, sources previously told Reuters.

Companies with satellite operating or communications businesses, like Eutelsat and Inmarsat, are expected to make a stronger case as buyers, because synergies with their existing operations mean they can pay more.

However, private equity bids could receive a boost from debt funding from the United States made available by SingTel advisers Credit Suisse Group and Morgan Stanley. The two banks are providing a loan of around A$1.7 billion that buyers can use for the acquisition.

Optus Satellite operates five satellites, with another, Optus 10, scheduled for launch in 2013. SingTel acquired the satellite arm when it bought Optus in 2001 for US$14 billion ($17.6 billion).

TPG takes part in 2 bids for SingTel's Australia satellite unit
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/44442-tpg-takes-part-in-2-bids-for-singtels-australia-satellite-unit.html

Wed, 26 Jun 10:16
Private equity firm TPG Capital is involved in two separate bids for Singapore Telecommunications Ltd’s Australian satellite unit, a business valued at more than A$2 billion ($2.4 billion), the Australian Financial Review reported.

TPG was involved in a bid with Blackstone Group as well as separate one with Malaysian satellite business MEASAT, the newspaper said in its online edition.

TPG declined to comment.

Trade buyer Eutelsat Communications SA and fellow private equity firm KKR also took part in the first round bids, AFR said.

SingTel, Southeast Asia’s largest telecom operator, has put the satellite business of its Australian unit Optus on sale as it battles tepid growth in its key markets of Singapore and Australia.

Reuters sources have said that other bidders include Asia Satellite Telecommunications Holdings, Intelsat, Sky Perfect Jsat Holdings Inc, Britain’s Inmarsat, Carlyle Group and SES .

Optus has circulated an information memorandum for the business to interested parties, and will provide more details next month, when selected bidders submit final bids, the newspaper said.

Optus Satellite operates five satellites, with another scheduled for launch in 2013. SingTel acquired the satellite arm when it bought Optus in 2001 for US$14 billion ($17.8 billion).

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/40031/

MICA rejects SingTel's cross-carriage appeal
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/44879-mica-rejects-singtels-cross-carriage-appeal.html

Fri, 26 Jul 19:25
Yaacob Ibrahim, the Minister for Communications and Information, has rejected SingTel's appeal and reaffirmed a finding by the Media Development Authority (MDA) in April which had deemed SingTel's EPL broadcast rights deal an exclusive one and therefore subjected to the cross-carriage rule.

On April 24, 2013, MDA issued a Direction to SingNet to cross-carry the Barclays Premier League live matches over the next three seasons, starting from 2013/2014 to 2015/2016.

On April 26, SingNet submitted both an appeal to the Minister against MDA’s Direction and a request for the Direction to be suspended pending a decision on the appeal.

On June 6, the Minister decided against suspending MDA’s Direction, and SingNet was required to continue its efforts in making the necessary arrangements to cross-carry the BPL content while the full appeal process continued.

MICA said the Minister, having carefully considered the written arguments from SingTel and MDA, has decided to reject SingNet’s appeal against MDA’s Direction.

It added that the Minister’s decision to reject SingNet’s appeal was made based on the assessment of a number of factors. A key consideration was whether certain clauses in the agreement between SingNet and the Football Association Premier League Limited prevent or restrict or are likely to prevent or restrict the BPL Content from being acquired or otherwise obtained for transmission on selected network platforms in Singapore by other pay-TV operators. The Minister considered the qualitative and quantitative effects of these clauses.

The Minister also noted that the key objectives of the Cross-Carriage Measure include addressing the high degree of content fragmentation and encouraging pay-TV operators to shift from a content-centric strategy to other forms of competition, such as service and content innovation.  Pay-TV operators should keep this in mind and continue to provide better value to the consumers. The Minister has also suggested that MDA consider providing further guidance on the circumstances that may trigger the Cross-Carriage Measure so that pay-TV operators can provide more certainty to consumers.

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/40632/

SingTel announces $59.90/month BPL stand-alone subscription
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/44882-singtel-announces-5990month-bpl-stand-alone-subscription.html

Sat, 27 Jul 18:35
SingTel's mio TV has unveiled its packages and prices for the upcoming season of Barclays Premier League (BPL) broadcast. The announcement comes after MDA’s decision that mio TV does not have to cross-carry channels included in its BPL Gold Packs. Only stand-alone BPL content will be cross-carried.

“With the government’s decisions regarding the BPL content, we can focus on bringing the start of the season to all Singapore football fans. We are announcing our packages and prices today to give everyone sufficient time to sign up before the new season kicks off on 17 August,” said Allen Lew, Country Chief Officer-Singapore, SingTel.

The BPL stand-alone subscription will also be offered on both mio TV and the alternative pay-TV platform at $59.90 per month. The cross-carriage ruling requires the BPL standalone subscription price to be the same, regardless of the platform. The price for BPL stand-alone subscription reflects the cost of providing the matches as a stand-alone service.

mio TV will maintain existing prices for its Gold Packs (BPL, sports, movies and family entertainment bundled packages). For $64.90 a month, football fans and their families will enjoy more than 80 channels.

SingTel to keep Australian Optus satellite unit after review
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/45084-singtel-to-keep-australian-optus-satellite-unit-after-review.html

Tue, 13 Aug 19:18
Singapore Telecommunications, Southeast Asia’s biggest phone company, plans to keep its Australian satellite unit after concluding a strategic review.

“Based on the review, SingTel is committed to growing and investing in the satellite business,” the company said in a statement.

SingTel was seeking more than A$2 billion ($2.3 billion) for the Optus Satellite unit, which provides television, radio, phone, Internet data and military signals to Australia, New Zealand and the Antarctic, people familiar with the matter said in July. The company was considering an initial public offering of the business after drawing lower-than-expected bids, people with knowledge of the process said last week.

Optus Satellite attracted bidders including Intelsat SA, the Luxembourg-based commercial satellite operator, people familiar with the matter said Aug. 9. A group that included Measat Global Bhd., TPG Capital and Blackstone Group LP dropped out of bidding and signaled to SingTel that it wasn’t willing to pay more than US$1.7 billion ($2.1 billion), according to a person with knowledge of the deliberations.

SingTel bought the business as part of the takeover of Optus, Australia’s second-largest phone company, in 2001. In March, SingTel said it was considering options for Optus Satellite. It hasn’t reported separate earnings figures for the unit since the 2001 takeover.

Facing slowing sales in Australia and Singapore, SingTel is seeking new sources of growth. Divesting Optus Satellite, which had revenue of A$319 million in the year ended March 2012, would help finance the $2 billion of acquisitions that SingTel is planning.

With five spacecraft in orbit, Optus Satellite broadcasts signals to more than two million Australian households and companies and will launch a sixth satellite this year, according to SingTel. Its customers include state-owned Australian Broadcasting Corp., the Foxtel joint venture between Telstra Corp. and News Corp., and Australia’s Department of Defence.

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/40834/

SingTel's profit beats estimates on cost cuts, associates
http://sgx.i3investor.com/servlets/fdnews/44195.jsp

Publish date: Wed, 14 Aug 09:01
SingTel Singapore Telecommunications, Southeast Asia’s biggest phone company, posted first-quarter profit that beat analyst estimates after cutting costs at its Optus unit in Australia and higher earnings from associates.

Net income rose to $1.01 billion in the three months to June compared with $945.3 million a year earlier, SingTel, as the Singapore-based company is known, said in a statement today. Profit was projected at $928.7 million, according to the average of three analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg. Sales dropped 5.3% to $4.29 billion.

SingTel plans to spend $2 billion on acquisitions as growth in wireless earnings slows in Singapore and other countries. The company’s expansion into faster-growing Southeast Asian markets, including a stake in Thailand’s Advance Info Service Pcl, is limiting the impact of slowing growth at Indian associate Bharti Airtel after a price war.

“Our regional mobile associates have continued to perform well,” Chief Executive Officer Chua Sock Koong said today. “We are also pleased to see some pricing discipline returning to the Indian mobile market.”

The carrier owns stakes in Indonesia’s PT Telekomunikasi Selular and Globe Telecom Inc. in the Philippines.

Group revenue will decline by a “mid-single digit level” and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization will fall at a “low single digit level,” the company said today. SingTel previously forecast little changed sales.

Optus Cuts
SingTel shares rose 0.5% to $3.82 in Singapore yesterday. The stock has climbed 16% this year, compared with a 2.4% advance in the benchmark Straits Times Index.

First-quarter Ebitda at Optus, Australia’s second-largest phone company, rose 4.9% to A$572 million ($659 million).

While revenue at Optus declined 5.3%, the company cut operating expenses 9% on lower selling and administrative costs. The unit in May agreed to pay A$649 million for an allocation of airwaves to build up its wireless network to attract more customers from Telstra Corp. and other competitors.

Telstra, Australia’s largest phone company, last week posted a 12% gain in full-year profit as a surge in new users for its fourth-generation network boosted its share of the mobile phone market to almost 50%.

SingTel yesterday said it will retain the Optus Satellite unit after completing a review of the business.

Singapore Gains
Revenue from its mobile business in Singapore rose 7% to $506 million, helped by higher data contribution and a cut in handset subsidies, the company said.

The profit contribution from regional associates climbed 14% to $552 million in the quarter on higher results from Indonesia, Thailand and India, the company said.

The pretax earnings contribution from Bharti gained 20% to $113 million on growth in data.

SingTel owns all of its Singapore and Australian phone businesses in addition to minority stakes in other mobile operators giving it 477 million customers across 25 countries in Asia, Africa and Australia.

SingTel says satellite investment trumps tie-up
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/45106-singtel-says-satellite-investment-trumps-tie-up.html

Publish date: Thu, 15 Aug 10:14
Singapore Telecommunications Chief Executive Officer Chua Sock Koong considered partnerships and the sale of the company’s Australian satellite unit before deciding this week to invest further in the business.

Southeast Asia’s biggest phone company was seeking more than A$2 billion ($2.3 billion) for the Optus Satellite unit, which provides television, radio, phone, Internet data and military signals to Australia, New Zealand and the Antarctic, people familiar with the matter said last month.

“The objective of the strategic review was to see if there were other options, whether it’s through further investments, through divestments, partnerships,” Chua said in a Bloomberg Television interview yesterday. “The outcome of the review is that it would create the most value if we continue to keep the business and to invest in the business.”

The decision to keep the satellite unit came after a review of the asset since March. Investment into the unit, bought as part of the US$9.69 billion ($12.3 billion) takeover of Australia’s Optus in 2001, comes as SingTel plans a new satellite launch in the next 12 months. Optus, the country’s second-biggest phone company, accounts for about two-thirds of SingTel’s revenue.

“The satellite business is always something that helps diversify your revenues, and it gives you exposure to the broadcasting industry in Australia and New Zealand,” said Kelvin Goh, an analyst at CIMB Securities in Kuala Lumpur, who rates the stock neutral. The key concern is the effect of a stronger Singapore dollar on earnings from markets such as Australia, he said.

The Australian dollar has fallen 8.6% against the Singapore counterpart this year.

RISING EARNINGS
SingTel reported first-quarter profit that beat analysts’ estimates yesterday, helped by cost cuts at the Optus unit and higher earnings from associates. Net income rose 7% to $1.01 billion in the three months to June, compared with the $928.7 million average of three analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

The company owns stakes in phone companies including India’s Bharti Airtel, Thailand’s Advance Info Service Pcl, Indonesia’s PT Telekomunikasi Selular and Globe Telecom Inc. in the Philippines.

India’s rupee lost 7.4% this year, crimping Bharti Airtel’s contribution when repatriated, while the Philippine peso fell 2.5%. The Indonesian rupiah also weakened against the Singapore currency, while the Thai baht climbed.

RAISING CASH
Divesting Optus Satellite would have helped finance the $2 billion of acquisitions that SingTel is planning to expand its digital operations, a target reiterated by Chua yesterday. She didn’t give further details on the satellite unit review.

SingTel also considered an initial public offering of the unit after drawing lower-than-expected bids, people with knowledge of the process said last week.

“To SingTel’s management, they feel that it’s a strong and attractive business,” said Jonathan Koh, an analyst at UOB Kay- Hian Research in Singapore, who rates the stock hold. “The margins are very high but the direct synergies are very minimal.”

Optus Satellite attracted bidders including Intelsat SA, the Luxembourg-based commercial satellite operator, people familiar with the matter said Aug. 9. A group that included Measat Global Bhd., TPG Capital and Blackstone Group LP dropped out of bidding and signaled to SingTel that it wasn’t willing to pay more than US$1.7 billion, according to a person with knowledge of the deliberations.

BROADCAST MARKET
“The satellite business is a very successful business, very profitable business and serves the broadcast market in addition to the telecoms market,” Chua said, without giving specific financial details of the satellite unit.

In March, SingTel said it was considering options for Optus Satellite. It hasn’t reported separate earnings figures for the unit since the 2001 takeover.

With five spacecraft in orbit, Optus Satellite broadcasts signals to more than 2 million Australian households and companies with plans to launch a sixth satellite. Its customers include state-owned Australian Broadcasting Corp., the Foxtel joint venture between Telstra Corp. and News Corp., and Australia’s Department of Defence.

“We had over the last few years already renewed our satellite fleet,” Chua said. “We have another satellite that would be launched within the next 12 months. Obviously with the new satellite planned, we’ll be looking at further services that we can offer with the satellite.”

SingTel to pay $383.6 mil for more shares in Bharti Telecom
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/45119-singtel-to-pay-3836-mil-for-more-shares-in-bharti-telecom.html

Publish date: Thu, 15 Aug 21:32
Singapore Telecommunications, Southeast Asia’s biggest phone company, will buy more shares in Bharti Telecom to tap potential growth in India.

SingTel, as the company is known, will buy 788,538 shares, or 3.62%, of Bharti Telecom for $383.6 million from MacRitchie Investments, SingTel said in a statement to the Singapore stock exchange today.

SingTel plans to spend $2 billion on acquisitions as growth in wireless earnings slows in Singapore and other countries. The company has said it is considering increasing stakes in its associates as it taps into the growth opportunities in faster-growing markets in Asia.

SingTel also owns stakes in phone companies including Thailand’s Advanced Info Service Pcl, Indonesia’s PT Telekomunikasi Selular and Globe Telecom Inc. in the Philippines.

SingTel’s stake in Bharti Telecom, which is linked to Bharti Airtel, will increase to 39.78% from 36.16% after the acquisition. The company’s effective interest in Bharti Airtel will rise to 32.34% from 30.76%.

The deal is expected to be completed Aug. 28, according to SingTel.

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/40931/
