http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/41616/

M1, StarHub oppose SingTel ownership of fibre network
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/45571-m1-starhub-oppose-singtel-ownership-of-fibre-network.html

Publish date: Wed, 25 Sep 20:13
Seven Singapore telecom firms, including M1 and StarHub, on Wednesday asked the government to reject Singapore Telecommunication Ltd’s proposed acquisition of the firm developing the city-state’s next generation broadband network.

NetLink Trust, a trust controlled by SingTel, has proposed acquiring OpenNet, the consortium developing the broadband network, for $126 million in a deal that requires regulatory approval from the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore.

“If approved, the proposed consolidation would see SingTel becoming the 100% beneficial owner of the only other nationwide fixed telecommunications network in Singapore, apart from SingTel’s own network,” the seven companies said in a joint statement.

“The unprecedented show of solidarity demonstrates the grave concerns the industry has over the competition issues raised by the proposed consolidation, including the potential of discriminatory treatment and a lack of independence,” they added.

MDA explains why it forced SingTel to share BPL Live content
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/45671-mda-explains-why-it-forced-singtel-to-share-bpl-live-content.html

Publish date: Wed, 2 Oct 12:52
The Media Authority of Singapore has for the first time today revealed its reasons for ordering SingTet to share its Barclays Premier League Live Package content with StarHub.

In a press release put up on its website, MDA said that in its acquisition agreement with Football Association Premier League Limited (FAPL), SingTel had stipulated that any subsequent acquirer of the Barclays Premier League Live broadcast rights would not be allowed to engage in any form of marketing to promotional activity before a certain prescribed time.

FAPL also had to give SingTel advance notice before a subsequent acquirer can begin marketing or promotional activities.

MDA says such restriction will reduce the attractiveness and value of the Barclays Premier League content to a potential subsequent acquirer.

The authority also noted that in the event the FAPL licenses the Barclays Premier League Live broadcast rights to a subsequent acquirer, SingTel will be entitled to a significant price reduction of the fees payable to FAPL under the agreement.

MDA said this would negate the incentive of try FAPL to license the broadcast rights at a price less than the discount FAPL is required to provide SingTel.

“Coupled with the price barrier created by the Pricing Provision, the combined effect of the Relevant Clauses would render the Barclays Premier League Live Package content rights commercially unviable to a subsequent acquirer," the authority concluded.

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/41940/

SingTel 2Q profit beats estimates on local sales
Source: Bloomberg   |   Publish date: Thu, 14 Nov 10:13
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/46319-singtel-2q-profit-beats-estimates-on-local-sales.html

Singapore Telecommunications, Southeast Asia’s biggest phone company, posted second-quarter profit that beat analysts’ estimates as strong domestic sales offset the negative impact of a rising local currency.

Underlying earnings after tax, which exclude one-time items, rose to $884 million in the three months ended Sept. 30 from $886 million a year earlier, SingTel, as the Singapore-based company is known, said in a statement today. That compares with the $862 million median estimate of four analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News.

SingTel is boosting spending on acquisitions and adding digital businesses such as mobile advertising to limit reliance on its biggest markets, Singapore and Australia, where growth is slowing. The company is expanding in faster-growing Asian markets, including increasing its stake in Bharti Airtel, India’s biggest wireless carrier.

“In the developing markets where our regional mobile associates operate, millions of customers are experiencing the internet for the first time via their mobile phones,” Chief Executive Officer Chua Sock Koong said in the statement. “Our strong operating performance was impacted by the strengthening of the Singapore Dollar.”

Net income in the quarter rose to $870 million from $868 million a year earlier, SingTel said. Sales fell 8.9% to $4.16 billion.

MOBILE BUSINESS
The company maintained its full-year forecast. SingTel previously projected a “mid-single digit” decline in group revenue and a “low-single digit” drop in earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization.

SingTel shares fell 1.1% to close at $3.76 yesterday in Singapore trading. The stock has gained 14% this year, compared with a benchmark Straits Times Index that is little changed. Shares in SingTel’s Australian listing rose 0.3% to A$3.23 at 11:11 a.m. in Sydney today.

Revenue from its mobile business in Singapore rose 7.3%% to $516 million amid a 6.5% increase in subscriber numbers, the company said.

Second-quarter Ebitda at Optus, Australia’s second-largest phone company, rose 3.2% to $748 million.

The post-tax profit contribution from regional associates dropped 12%% to $354 million in the quarter as the Indonesian Rupiah and Indian Rupee slumped against the Singapore dollar, the company said.

SingTel owns all of its Singapore and Australian phone businesses in addition to minority stakes in other mobile operators, including Bharti Airtel, Indonesia’s PT Telekomunikasi Selular and Globe Telecom Inc. in the Philippines.

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/44528/

http://www.sharesinv.com/zh/articles/44609/

SingTel 3Q net profit rises on strength of regional affiliates
Source: Reuters   |   Publish date: Thu, 13 Feb 09:21
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/47234-singtel-3q-net-profit-rises-on-strength-of-regional-affiliates.html

Singapore Telecommunications beat forecasts with a 6% rise in third-quarter net profit, as strength in its regional affiliates helped overcome the negative impact of a volatile foreign currency market.

Southeast Asia’s largest telecommunications operator posted a net profit for the Oct.-Dec. quarter of $872 million ($688.62 million), beating an average forecast of US$857 million ($1.08 billion) by five analysts polled by Reuters.

Its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) were nearly flat from a year earlier at $1.26 billion.

The company’s operating revenue declined 7.3% on the year to $4.26 billion, hit by the sharp decline in the Australian dollar, it said on Thursday.

SingTel’s share of its associates’ pre-tax profits saw a strong 11% gain, mainly thanks to robust earnings growth from Bharti Airtel, the top mobile phone operator in India in which SingTel has a 32% stake.

Its total number of mobile customers increased 3% in the quarter to 501 million, SingTel said.

SingTel’s major overseas businesses are in Australia, India and Indonesia. The Australian dollar, the Indonesian rupiah and the Indian rupee declined 9%, 18% and 12% respectively against the Singapore dollar during the quarter.

The company revised guidance on segment performance for the financial year ending March 2014, expecting low double-digit declines in consumer business revenue and low single-digit falls in enterprise business income.

“We have updated our revenue guidance for Group Consumer and Group Enterprise as a result of the weak Australian dollar and the more cautious business environment and spending,” Group CEO Chua Sock Koong said in a statement.

SingTel to rejoin Telstra mobile fight as Optus sales fall 14%
Source: Bloomberg   |   Publish date: Thu, 13 Feb 14:24
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/47240-singtel-to-rejoin-telstra-mobile-fight-as-optus-sales-fall-14.html

Singapore Telecommunications will renew a push to win mobile users against Telstra Corp. in Australia after currency moves and a focus on profitability drove its quarterly sales in the country down 14%.

“We see a very exciting opportunity for us to regain market share,” Kevin Russell, country chief of SingTel’s Australian unit, Optus, said on a call after the company reported earnings today.

Telstra is buying spectrum in its push for greater dominance in Australia’s A$24 billion ($27 billion) mobile market as it prepares to hand over more-profitable fixed lines to a national fiber network. Optus, responsible for more than half of SingTel’s revenue, is moving away from a strategy that has seen it focus on boosting margins over sales for at least the past year.

Optus needs to “start addressing their revenue challenges,” Sachin Gupta, an analyst at Nomura Holdings Inc., said by phone from Singapore. “It’s not easy gaining customers. Telstra’s networks are actually very hard to match.”

Optus signed up a net 22,000 mobile subscribers in 2012 and 2013, trailing the 2.5 million added by Telstra, Australia’s largest phone company, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

HIGHER DIVIDEND
In the three years through June, Telstra increased its share of Australia’s mobile market to 49% from about 41%, according to government and company data. Optus’s share fell to 31% from 33%, and third-placed Vodafone Hutchison Australia Pty. slipped to 19% from 29%.

Telstra rose 0.8% to A$5.15 in Sydney trading. SingTel climbed 1.4% to $3.56 as of 1:52 p.m. in Singapore.

Telstra increased its dividend for the first time in nine years today, by half an Australian cent to 14.5 cents, as it reported net income rose 9.2% to A$1.7 billion in the first half ended December. Revenue climbed 3.6% to A$12.6 billion, with sales in the domestic mobile division gaining 6.4% to A$4.86 billion.

The company’s domestic mobile-phone subscribers increased by 739,000 in the six months through December, for a total of 15.7 million subscribers.

GOOD MARGINS
Its operating profit margin of 24% is the third- highest among phone companies with revenues greater than US$10 billion ($12.7 billion) serving primarily developed markets, data compiled by Bloomberg show. That compares with SingTel’s 17%.

“Good margins always attract competitors,” Mark McDonnell, an analyst at BBY in Sydney, said by phone. “If Vodafone and Optus were to compete more effectively across the same range of services Telstra offers, we would see a more competitive market.”

Telstra has committed to spending A$2.4 billion over two years on its mobile network, as it prepares to hand parts of the fixed-line unit to government-backed NBN Co. The moves will transform the company from the nation’s biggest seller of wholesale phone and data services to its largest consumer.

“Long may competition be rich and vibrant, but we’re well prepared,” Telstra Chief Executive Officer David Thodey told an investor call today.

LOWER COSTS
SingTel’s net income climbed 5.4% from a year earlier to $872 million in the three months ended December as the operator cut costs. Sales fell 7.3% to $4.3 billion.

Cost reductions helped Optus’s profit rise 41% to A$227 million. Sales fell 5% to A$2.16 billion and were down 14% after converting to Singapore dollars. The Australian dollar weakened 9% against its Singapore counterpart during the quarter, SingTel said.

Optus increased its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization margin by 3.9%age points to 29% in the third quarter. The carrier doesn’t break out the margin for its mobile unit.

Optus’s mobile customer numbers dropped 102,000 in the quarter, the fastest pace in at least six years, to 9.4 million.

“Telstra is taking share in most of its markets,” Theo Maas, a partner at Arnhem Investment Management Pty in Sydney, said by phone before the results. “Their competitors have dropped the ball.”

Temasek seeks to sell $3.9 bil stake in Thailand's Shin Corp to SingTel
Source: Reuters   |   Publish date: Tue, 18 Feb 09:36
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/47297-temasek-seeks-to-sell-39-bil-stake-in-thailands-shin-corp-to-singtel.html

Singapore state investor Temasek Holdings Pvt Ltd is seeking to sell its US$3.1 billion ($3.9 billion) stake in Thai telecom company Shin Corp, according to people familiar with the matter, and has approached its SingTel unit as a possible buyer.

Temasek, which owns 41.6% of Shin Corp through a subsidiary, held talks with Singapore Telecommunications Co, as SingTel is formally known, late last year, said the people, who declined to be identified as the information is not public. Those discussions have since stalled amid political tensions in Thailand, they said.

The Temasek stake in Shin Corp, founded by former Thailand prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, is worth US$3.1 billion by current market value. In 2006 Temasek led a group of investors including Surin Upatkoon, a Chinese-Thai businessman, that bought 96% of Shin Corp for US$3.8 billion: Temasek didn’t disclose how much it paid for its holding.

“The strategic buyer in which Temasek has a vested interest to sell to here is SingTel. So basically it is going to be an intra-group reorganization,” one Hong Kong-based M&A banker said.

The move by Temasek, which oversees US$170 billion, to sell its ownership in Shin Corp is consistent with other attempts by the state investor to consolidate some portfolio companies. This would be Temasek’s first attempt to bring part of its telecoms operations in the region under one roof, analysts said.

However, some of its past consolidation efforts have failed to bear fruit. Last year its financial services portfolio company DBS Group Holdings made a bid for Bank Danamon Indonesia Tbk, but it failed to get approval from Indonesian regulator.

POLITICAL STALEMATE
The slowdown in Shin Corp deal talks makes it the second potential transaction in Thailand to be put on the back burner due to political stalemate. ING Groep’s planned sale of a 31% stake in TMB Bank Pcl has also hit roadblocks, Reuters previously reported.

The 2006 Shin Corp deal triggered accusations of insider trading and tax evasion as the Shinawatra family and others involved received US$1.9 billion tax-free. Thaksin insisted at the time that the sale satisfied all the rules in a country where share sales conducted through the stock market are not taxed.

Protests in Bangkok followed, ultimately leading to a coup that ousted Thaksin.

Temasek owns 52% of SingTel and a successful acquisition by the latter of the Shin Corp stake would help SingTel to boost its exposure to a relatively bigger market and offset sluggish growth in mature economies.

Shin Corp controls the biggest Thai mobile phone operator, and has interests in several telecommunications businesses, including Advanced Info Service Pcl, Thailand’s largest mobile phone operator, and satellite firm Thaicom Pcl. SingTel already owns 23% of AIS.

Along with Thai investors, Temasek and Surin Upatkoon bought the 96% Shin Corp holding in 2006 through a vehicle known as Cedar Holdings Ltd. While Cedar has since sold most of its ownership, Temasek remains a Shin Corp shareholder through a subsidiary called Aspen.

A spokesman for Temasek Holdings declined to comment on the talks. A Shin Corp official in Bangkok declined to comment, while a SingTel spokeswoman also declined comment.

Shares in SingTel opened flat in Singapore on Tuesday morning.

SingTel raising $1.8 bln 3-year loan
Source: Reuters   |   Publish date: Wed, 19 Feb 18:44
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/47324-singtel-raising-18-bln-3-year-loan.html

Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel) is finalising a $1.8 billion loan with a group of local and international banks, Basis Point, a Thomson Reuters publication, reported on Wednesday.

The new three-year facility will be structured as a revolving credit loan which means that it will allow SingTel to draw down at any point in time and use the proceeds for general corporate purposes, including acquisitions.

The refinancing plan, which was first flagged by Basis Point last month, comes amid news that Singapore Temasek Holdings Pvt is seeking to sell its $3.1 billion stake in Thai telecom company Shin Corp and has approached its SingTel
unit as a possible buyer.

Basis Point said Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Citigroup , DBS Bank and HSBC are among the 10 or so existing lenders involved in the three-year refinancing.

The new loan has been close to 50% oversubscribed with pricing said to be in the 40 to 50 basis point range on an all-in basis, Basis Point reported quoting sources.

The deal is expected to be closed before the end of March.

SingTel has a $2.16 billion three-year revolving credit due this June, Basis Point reported.

SingTel net income misses estimates as Australia sales dip
Source: Bloomberg   |   Publish date: Thu, 15 May 19:09
http://www.theedgesingapore.com/the-daily-edge/business/48357-singtel-net-income-misses-estimates-as-australia-sales-dip-update.html

Singapore Telecommunications, Southeast Asia’s biggest phone company, posted fourth-quarter profit that missed analysts’ estimates as sales in Australia dropped and weaker currencies affected contributions from units.

Net income rose 3.5% to $898.3 million in the three months ended in March, from $868.2 million a year earlier, the Singapore-based company said in a statement to the stock exchange today. That compares with the $904 million average of five analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg for net income GAAP.

SingTel is trying to reignite growth at its Optus phone division in Australia, its biggest unit, where sales have dropped in recent quarters. It’s also increasing its foothold in new digital businesses, including mobile advertising. The company, which gets less than half its revenue from its home market, is expanding in Asian markets, including India, where it holds a stake in Bharti Airtel.

“They’re losing traction in Australia,” Carey Wong, an analyst at OCBC Investment Research in Singapore, said by phone. “The rollout of 4G may help them capture market share, though pricing pressures could still be an issue. Improvements in Singapore won’t immediately offset the weakness in Australia.”

SingTel’s underlying net profit, or earnings before exceptional items, fell 8.1% to $920 million, compared with the $916.8 million average of six analysts’ estimates for adjusted net income. Total sales dropped 7.9% to $4.13 billion, beating the average projection of $3.84 billion.

SHARES DECLINES
SingTel shares rose 0.3% to $3.85 at the close in Singapore, compared with the benchmark Straits Times Index, which added 0.4%.

SingTel owns all of its Singapore and Australian phone businesses in addition to minority stakes in other mobile operators, including Bharti Airtel, Indonesia’s PT Telekomunikasi Selular and Globe Telecom Inc. in the Philippines.

“Associate contributions were a little below expectation, due to weak contributions from Telkomsel as a result of a weaker rupiah,” Kelvin Goh and Ian Martin, analysts at CIMB Group Holdings Bhd. who rate the stock add, said in a report. “Operationally, they performed within expectations.”

AUSTRALIA SALES
Sales at the Australia division fell 4.9% to A$2.07 billion ($2.43 billion), while pretax profit contribution from regional associates rose 4.8% to $566 million, the company said. The Australian Dollar, Indonesian Rupiah and the Indian Rupee weakened by between 11% and 20% against the Singapore dollar during the quarter, it said.

Consumer revenue in Singapore increased 5%, bolstered by continued growth in mobile and cable television services, SingTel said.

Group revenue and earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortization, or Ebitda, are expected to remain stable in the current financial year, the company said. SingTel said it expects mobile sales in Singapore to increase by mid single digit, while those in Australia will decline by low single digit.

The company’s board is recommending a final ordinary dividend per share of 10 cents, bringing the total ordinary dividend per share for the year to 16.8 cents, equivalent to a payout ratio of 74% of underlying net profit. Group capital expenditure will be $2.3 billion in the current financial year, comprising $900 million for Singapore the balance for Australia, it said.

OPTUS INVESTMENT
SingTel’s Optus unit plans to invest A$1.2 billion ($1.4 billion ) in infrastructure this year, the biggest in more than a decade, the Australian reported April 19, citing Paul O’Sullivan, head of the company’s consumer group. The unit may cut more than 200 jobs in Australia, the Australian Financial Review said on April 29.

The company was fined $6 million for a fire at its Bukit Panjang Exchange in October last year that disrupted services to as many as 60,000 customers. The accident was caused by an employee that wasn’t following strict maintenance procedures, which included using an unauthorized blowtorch, the company said in November.
